Often we hear the question-which period of human history has been the "greatest"? For some people, it is the antiquity, while others value the simplicity of the world a century ago. For my part, when I contrast today and then, I believe that we are presently in one of the best periods of human existence. Though modern society can be very complicated, it is also today that people have options, knowledge, and ease in their daily lives that earlier generations would never have imagined.
Life was far less easy previously, compared with the contemporary era. Diseases which now are not a problem for many were deadly on an immense scale and went unabated for periods; journeys across the world took days rather than hours; communications took many days to arrive where today one can communicate with someone on the other side of the earth in seconds. Education was generally reserved for those few who had privileged status. Most individuals had little control over what employment they held, or indeed even what they believed to be true. Though people then had stronger communities and simpler lives, they also endured poverty, injustice and precarious living nearly every day.
Technology has radically changed human existence in ways that are not always immediately obvious. Today one can communicate with another across the globe in an instant via a small hand-held device; students of any topic or subject can learn virtually anything they desire online; people are now able to live longer, healthier lives due to medical advancements, as travel times are drastically shortened making world-traversal something rather more mundane and accessible and technology has created new types of careers while making individuals' ideas, art and even tiny technological developments instantly and widely available.
Secondly, I also appreciate this period because more people have opportunities in life nowadays. People now are provided with more opportunities to be educated, to work, and to pursuit their dreams no matter where they are from or their backgrounds are. Social consciousness on human rights and equalities are developed more than many other periods in the past. Although problems still exists, a better future has been endeavor for.
It's not always perfect when living in modern world, too.Stress, pollution and the impact from social medias make the living harder than the others in some ways. Technologies may decrease people's face-to-face communication and bring lonely. Nevertheless, each generation has its own struggles, and that's how it is in life, I guess. But it's easier to solve these problems and make improvement in modern period compared to many others.
Personally I'm quite happy to live in this generation. I have had a good experience using advanced technologies, access to information and a freedom to decide my future. Although I admire and respect people in past, I can't imagine to live in the period without modern medical care, modern communication systems or educational opportunities.
Finally, although not every century in human history has been perfectly ideal, I still think that it's one of the best period to be a human being. Humanity has achieved tremendous achievements in sciences, technologies and social development. Rather than living in another century in our minds, we should be grateful for what we have now, and work harder for a better future.
