Online scams are on the rise these days with a lot more usage of internet for daily activities like shopping, banking, studies and communication. Online scams vary from fake links, phishing emails, hacking of social media accounts, online money frauds and a lot more.
Cyber crimes is an increasingly serious issue today and that's why it is important for everyone to be aware and protect their information and self from such frauds.
To save myself from falling prey to online scams, I try and practice some ways to keep myself safe online. First of all, I don't tend to click on links sent through a message, email or any social networking site which seems unknown to me.
Fake websites created by scammers which seem to be identical to real ones are created just to steal login details, passwords and financial information.
I double check the authenticity of a website by checking the URL carefully before I decide to access any website. I also use strong passwords for all my online accounts, which include letters, numbers, and special characters. I avoid using the same password for different accounts as it makes hacking of an account riskier.
Another measure that I have to save my account from fraudsters is enabling the two-factor authentication, which is commonly known as 2FA. It adds an extra layer of security by not only needing a password but also a verification code sent through your cell phone or email address if someone attempts to log in. Keeping my cell phone and computer up-to-date with the newest security software protects them from viruses and other malware.
Although I have never been a victim of an online fraud as major as scams I read about, I often receive mysterious text messages or emails saying I've won a lottery or that my bank account needs to be verified immediately or by pretending to be an employee of some bank or store. These messages usually ask for a one-time password or other private data that could be used by them. I instantly ignore such texts, delete and mark them as spam. This teaches me to stay alert.
In my opinion, phishing scams are the most threatening of all online frauds that happen today. Phishing scams include fake emails, websites or messages that usually appear to be coming from authentic sources.
These scams are very successful as they pretend to be sent from famous banks, shopping stores, government bodies etc. As soon as the victims enter their login details they lose their money or hack their accounts. Scams on social media are also becoming extremely prevalent especially for young ones who get easily persuaded to click links or trust new people.
My advice to everyone would be to be careful and think twice before sharing personal data online. Never share your passwords, OTP's, ATM PINs or bank account details with anyone even if they claim to be a part of some reliable organization.
One should also avoid downloading files from unfamiliar websites and get their transactions checked regularly for any fraudulent activities. Parents and teachers should educate children and students about cyber safety since knowledge is their only protection.
To conclude, scams have now become a significant threat and by keeping safe and learning precautions we can overcome this. Using strong passwords, not clicking suspicious links and verifying the authenticity of others we reduce the risk of being a victim to cybercrimes. Awareness will ultimately help in maintaining a better online environment for all.
