Philosophical question...

Let’s say I beat up my neighbor while he's mowing his lawn. The reason why isn’t important. Dude might have had it coming, maybe not.

My punishment is X.

**If the neighbor happens to be a sitting United States Senator, should my punishment be more severe? **

If I threaten my neighbor, I might get one local officer to look into my threats... If I threaten the president, I get federal law enforcement attention and a much more severe penalty.

Usually I am opposed to treating people unequally, (hate crimes) and I am vehemently opposed to treating elected officials differently than normal citizens (tax treatment, pensions, special healthcare, differing thresholds of prosecutability when committing crimes).

Anyone have any thoughts? Should the punishment change if the victim is "someone important"?
