I would like to talk about another must have for my worm farm, the backpack sprayer. For many people that have an at home worm farms this is not something that would warrant a $50 investment but for me it is worth having several. I use one for my worm teas in the green house and padlocks and I use one for my worm farms. It is always nice to be able to keep an extra backup just in case but these are modular in the aspect that they come apart in several spots so you can buy replacement parts for them instead of buying a whole new sprayer.
I use to use the hand pump 1 gal sprayers that you can buy for $5 - $10 each but they would only last several months before I would end up replacing them and running back and forth to refill it in between spraying bins or working in the green house which was not functional. I have around 40 tote containers for my worms along with 3 larger size CFT bins. If I am just giving a good mist down every other day or so it can take the full 4 gal between all the bins but if I am feeding and the bins have started to dry out a bit and needs to have peat moss added to drop the PH it can easily take a full gal or more for one CFT and sometimes even for a few of the smaller bins. One of my 55 gal tanks full of worms can end up taking half a gal during feedings depending on the time of the year and how the temps have been. The inside bins actually dry out more in the winter due to the heater in the house then in the summer time.
Not only is the ability to carry extra amounts of water time saving but also the ability to pump the sprayer while spraying and moving from bin to bin continuously so I don't actually ever stop spraying between bins. These three things cut back the time I spend on my bins by around 75% from when I was using smaller hand held sprayers. I always say either you can spend time or spend money and at the end of the day it only comes down to which one you are shorter on. If spending a little extra saves me a lot of extra time then I find the investment to be worth it. I spent more money replacing the 1 gal sprayers all the time then I have buying the larger backpack sprayers.
Hope anyone that has been considering going this route found this information useful.
