MEANING OF COLOURS AND EFFECTS ON THE PEOPLE
They say you cannot find two persons who perceive colours exactly the same. However, almost everybody will indicate Red as Red, and the meaning of the colour will be also similar for many people. Certainly, many people will interpret colours differently than me in this post. Many associations to certain colours or combinations of colours have a religious or cultural origin. For people from other cultures and religions, the same colours have quite a different meaning than for us European. Even as an atheist, agnostic or nihilist no one can escape entirely from this effect, especially not if he has grown up surrounded by Christianity. Only the colours blue and green might probably have a similar meaning for all people; sky and sea are blue, finally, on the whole earth; most plants are predominantly green.
Vermutlich werden sich nicht 2 Menschen finden lassen, die Farben tatsächlich genau gleich wahrnehmen. Fast alle werden aber Rot als Rot deuten, und die Bedeutung der Farbe wird auch für viele Menschen ähnlich sein. Sicher werden viele Menschen Farben anders deuten als ich in diesem Artikel. Viele Assoziationen zu bestimmten Farben oder Farbkombinationen haben einen religiösen oder kulturellen Ursprung. Für Menschen aus anderen Kulturkreisen und Religionen haben die gleichen Farben eine ganz andere Bedeutung als für uns Mitteleuropäer. Selbst als Atheist, Agnostiker oder Nihilist kann man sich von dieser Wirkung sicher nicht in Gänze befreien wenn man in einer christlich geprägten Umgebung aufgewachsen ist. Eine ähnliche Bedeutung für alle Menschen dürften wohl nur die Farben Blau und Grün haben; Himmel und Meer sind schließlich auf der gesamten Erde blau; die allermeisten Pflanzen sind überwiegend grün.
BLUE
Blue looks reassuring, peaceful, serious, cold, distant, infinite, rational and a little bit discouraging. Blue is understood often as a symbol for peace, permanence, passiveness, harmony, trust and loyalty. In almost all religions a connection with the sky, and the higher beings living about that, is created with the colour blue. In the material world blue is often to be found as a symbol of peace, UN, dove of peace etc. If round us everything is blue (sea, sky) we are quiet ordinarily and relaxed.
In Light Painting blue is technically seen a difficult colour. Blue kills sharpness and depth in the picture, due to the short wavelength of blue light burns out very fast.
Blau wirkt beruhigend, friedlich, ernsthaft, seriös, kalt, fern, unendlich, rational, seriös und etwas deprimierend. Blau wird oft als Symbol für Frieden, Beständigkeit, Passivität, Harmonie, Vertrauen und Treue verstanden. In fast allen Religionen wird mit der Farbe Blau eine Verbindung zum Himmel, und den darüber wohnenden höheren Wesen, geschaffen. In der materiellen Welt ist Blau oft als Symbol des Friedens zu finden, UNO, Friedenstaube usw. Wenn um uns herum alles blau ist (Meer, Himmel) sind wir gewöhnlicherweise ruhig und entspannt.
Im Light Painting ist Blau technisch gesehen eine schwierige Farbe. Blau frisst Schärfe und Tiefe im Bild, durch die kurze Wellenlänge von blauem Licht brennt Blau sehr schnell aus.
RED
Red means passion, energy, love, action, success. Red is warming as a symbol of fire and is powerful. Red excites immediate attention, therefore, is the colour of many warnings.
In a Christian religious point of view, blood, fire and the sufferings of Christ are symbolised with Red. In China is Red the colour of luck and wealth.
Red light can be steered in Light Painting very well. If I use too strong red light, it burns out not as fast as blue, but becomes first orange and then yellow.
Rot bedeutet Leidenschaft, Energie, Liebe, Aktion, Erfolg. Rot ist als Symbol für Feuer wärmend und kraftvoll. Rot erregt sofort Aufmerksamkeit, deshalb ist Rot die Farbe vieler Warnschilder.
In christlich religiöser Hinsicht symbolisiert Rot Blut, Feuer und die Leiden Christi. In China ist Rot die Farbe von Glück und Reichtum.
Rotes Licht lässt sich im Light Painting sehr gut steuern. Wenn ich zu starkes rotes Licht benutze brennt es nicht sofort aus wie blau, sondern wird erst orange und dann gelb.
GREEN
Green stands for health, growth, nature, youth, freshness, spring, hope and poison. Many green plants are also really toxic for the person. Most children do not want to eat the spinach because it is green and not because it tastes bad, like an inner precaution, so to say. On the other side ancient knowledge says us that survival is only possible for us if fresh green from the earth sprouts.
This colour is often used in hospitals by the reassuring and healthy effect and also in elevators, at least in old times with considerably less vandalism.
Green is the colour of Islam which said prophet Mohammed that looking the colour green is a service for god. The remedial bringer of the christianity Jesus entered with a green palm whisk in Jerusalem.
In the middle of grey, dark winters we put to our homes the evergreen christmas tree, a symbol of hope, a pagan custom.
In the picture above you can see quite good that the red light of the X21 on the right side becomes too yellow-orange and to the other that green burns out rather fast. The lower part of the Orb as well as in front (the lamp shines at this point directly in the camera) is burnt-out. If the sensor receives information with too much brightness, there is nothing you can do even in post-production. In case of the Orbs this can be avoided during the admission in the front area by fade-outs. In the lower part rather not because there all lines of the Orbs meet. If I had dimmed there so far that the place below does not burn out, there would be hardly anything to be seen from the remaining Orb. Such a thing is certainly still ok for most people when you are watching it on a monitor,, however, on prints, it does look like shit. Hardly no one would hang such a picture at 3-metre width about the couch, sometimes completely emancipated from the motive.
Grün steht für Gesundheit, Wachstum, Natur, Jugend, Frische, Frühling, Hoffnung und Gift. Viele grüne Planzen-(teile) sind ja auch tatsächlich giftig für den Menschen. Die meisten Kinder wollen den Spinat nicht essen weil er grün ist und nicht weil er ekelhaft schmeckt, eine angeborene Vorsichtsmaßnahme sozusagen. Auf der anderen Seite sagt uns uraltes Wissen, dass Überleben für uns nur möglich ist wenn wieder frisches Grün aus der Erde sprießt.
Durch die beruhigende und gesunde Wirkung wird diese Farbe oft in Krankenhäusern und, zumindest in früheren Zeiten mit erheblich weniger Vandalismus, gerne in Aufzügen verwendet.
Grün ist die Farbe des Islam, der Prophet Mohammed sagte, dass das Anschauen der Farbe Grün Gottesdienst sei. Der Heilsbringer des Christentums Jesus zog mit einem grünen Palmenwedel in Jerusalem ein.Als Symbol der Hoffnung stellen wir uns im grauen, dunklen Winter den immergrünen Weihnachtsbaum in die Wohnung, ein heidnischer Brauch.
Im Bild oben ist ganz gut zu sehen, dass zum Einen das rote Licht der X21 auf der rechten Seite über orange zu gelb wird und zum Anderen, dass grün recht schnell ausbrennt. Der Orb ist sowohl unten als auch vorne (die Lampe leuchtet an dieser Stelle direkt in die Kamera) ausgebrannt. Wenn die Pixel des Sensor mit voller Helligkeit angesteuert werden lässt sich das auch nachträglich in der Bildbearbeitung nicht korrigieren. Es ist nicht möglich Zeichnung und Farbe in diesen Bereichen wieder herzustellen. Im Falle des Orbs ließe sich das während der Aufnahme im vorderen Bereich durch Abblenden vermeiden. Unten eher nicht weil sich dort alle Linien des Orbs treffen. Hätte ich dort so weit abgeblendet, dass die Stelle unten nicht ausbrennt wäre vom restlichen Orb kaum noch etwas zu sehen. So etwas ist sicher für die meisten Menschen bei einer Darstellung auf dem Monitor noch akzeptabel, als (großer) Print sieht das allerdings Scheiße aus weil das Druckmedium an dieser Stelle schlichtweg nicht bedruckt wird. Wohl kaum jemand würde sich ein solches Bild in 3 Meter Breite über die Couch hängen, mal völlig emanzipiert vom Motiv.
YELLOW
Yellow is the colour of the sun, is brightest and friendliest of the colours introduced here. Yellow symbolises cheerfulness and optimism, however, is also very meddlesome. The negative interpretations are envy, jealousy, betrayal and cowardice. Yellow is used often as a colour for warning tips before dangers (poison, high voltage and similar). Most people abstain from Yellow instinctively. A Light Painting with high yellow portion will hold many viewers therefore also on distance. However, in small parts, we can use yellow light well in Light Art Photography.
Gelb ist die Farbe der Sonne, die hellste und freundlichste der hier vorgestellten Farben. Gelb symbolisiert Heiterkeit und Optimismus, ist allerdings auch sehr aufdringlich. Die negativen Deutungen sind Neid, Eifersucht, Verrat und Feigheit. Gelb wird oft als Farbe für Warnhinweise vor Gefahren (Gift, Hochspannung und ähnliches) verwendet. Von Gelb halten die meisten Leute also instinktiv Abstand. Ein Light Painting mit hohem Gelbanteil wird viele Betrachter demzufolge auch auf Abstand halten. In kleinen Dosen kann man gelbes Licht aber durchaus gut in der Light Art Photography verwenden.
ORANGE
Orange stands for joy of life, energy, warmth and exoticism. Most people have no negative association with this colour. A picture with a high portion of orange light will appeal to many people immediately positively. Orange light can be used in Light Painting nicely. The connection with the complementary colour blue or bluish green (according to the brightness of the orange colour) is an often used colour combination in Light Painting. Pleasing to the eye and mostly without negative feelings and meanings. This colour combination comes close to the mood of a sundown by the sea and generates, therefore, with most people immediately positive feelings.
Orange symbolisiert Lebensfreude, Energie, Wärme und Exotik. Die meisten Menschen haben keine negativen Assoziation zu dieser Farbe. Ein Bild mit einem hohen Anteil an orangem Licht wird also viele Menschen sofort positiv ansprechen. Oranges Licht lässt sich im Light Painting gut steuern. Die Verbindung mit der Komplementärfarbe blau bzw. blaugrün (je nach der Helligkeit der orangen Farbe) ist eine oftmals benutzte Farbkombination im Light Painting. Gefällig für das Auge und meist ohne negative Gefühle und Bedeutungen. Diese Farbkombination kommt der Stimmung eines Sonnenuntergangs am Meer recht nahe und erzeugt auch deshalb bei den meisten Menschen sofort positive Gefühle.
VIOLET
This colour is taken in contrast to orange almost completely with negative meanings and feelings, grief, rest, penalty, sexual frustration. In the religious sense, the colour symbolises the connection of body (red) and mind (blue). And exactly this also happens in the Light Painting by use of both colours very fast. At places of the overlapping of the red and blue light, it becomes quite quickly quite violet. I use personally extremely seldom (intentionally) violet in my pictures, I do not see this colour simply with pleasure.
Diese Farbe ist im Gegensatz zu orange fast komplett mit negativen Bedeutungen und Gefühlen besetzt, Trauer, Ruhe, Buße, sexuelle Frustration. Im religiösen Sinne symbolisiert die Farbe die Verbindung von Körper (rot) und Geist (blau). Und genau das passiert auch im Light Patinting bei Verwendung der beiden Farben sehr schnell. An Stellen der Überschneidung des roten und blauen Lichtes wird es ganz schnell ganz violett. Ich persönlich benutze äußerst selten (absichtlich) violett in meinen Bildern, ich sehe diese Farbe einfach nicht gerne.
WHITE
White meant light, decency, cleanness and neutrality. You can use white light in almost every picture without hesitation in combination with other colours or also as the only colour.
Weiß bedeutet Licht, Anstand, Reinheit und Neutralität. Weißes Licht kann man in fast jedem Bild bedenkenlos in Kombination mit anderen Farben oder auch als einzige Farbe einsetzen.
BLACK
Black is no colour. Black is the absence of light. Black is the symbol of bad, of grief, death, darkness and evil. In Light Painting, we will often have more or less big black areas in the picture. Also in “normal” photos, bigger areas are often black. Our eye is accustomed to it, the least will get fear attacks at the sight of such pictures or fall into a deep depression. Using a black (dark) background our Light Paintings get generally only the desired effect. A lot would not be visible on a bright background. We need black in most pictures.
Schwarz ist keine Farbe. Schwarz ist die Abwesenheit von Licht. Schwarz ist das Symbol für Trauer, Tod, Finsternis und das Böse. Im Light Painting werden wir oftmals mehr oder weniger große schwarze Bereiche im Bild haben. Auch in "normalen" Fotos sind oftmals größere Bereiche schwarz. Unser Auge ist daran gewöhnt, die Wenigsten werden beim Anblick solcher Bilder Angstattacken bekommen oder in eine tiefe Depression fallen. Vor einem schwarzen (dunklen) Hintergrund bekommen unsere Light Paintings überhaupt erst die gewünschte Wirkung. Vieles wäre vor einem hellen Hintergrund nicht sichtbar. Wir brauchen also in den meisten Bildern schwarz.
Colours as brown, grey and gold play in my opinion no big role in Light Painting because its hard to implement them. That’s why I will not come further with their meaning.
What I write here are neither a law nor operating instructions, take it as suggestions and explanations. It is rather helpful if you know why the violet light is less pleasant than orange.
I often make the same picture with different colours and colour combinations and look then which version is best for me. You should not stop experimenting and doing only orange-blue pictures because the effect is good. This can go quite quickly quite boringly for you and the viewers of your pictures.
Farben wie braun, grau und gold spielen im Light Painting keine große Rolle weil sie sich sehr schlecht oder gar nicht darstellen lassen. Aus diesem Grund werde ich hier nicht weiter auf deren Bedeutung eingehen.
Meine Worte sind weder Gesetz noch Bedienungsanleitung, versteh sie lieber als Anregung und Erklärung. Es ist recht hilfreich wenn man weiß warum man violettes Licht weniger angenehm findet als oranges.
Ich mache oft das gleiche Bild mit verschiedenen Farben und Farbkombinationen und schau dann einfach welche Version mir am Besten gefällt. Auf keinen Fall solltest Du Aufhören zu experimentieren und nur noch orange-blaue Bilder machen weil die Wirkung gut ist. Das kann nämlich auch ganz schnell ganz langweilig für Dich und die Betrachter Deiner Bilder werden.
