Hi Everyone ❤
Today I would love to introduce you the aboriginal food from Ha Noi available at a restaurant located close to the Tan Son Nhat airport of Ho Chi Minh city. It’s Đậu Homemade restaurant, “đậu” means tofu in Vietnamese.
“Deep-fried tofu served with fresh herb, rice noodle and shrimp paste sauce” is a famous dish from Ha Noi that every Vietnamese person knows. The shrimp paste sauce has a very special taste, similar to durian. It’s a unique taste that can be difficult to become accustomed to, but once you learn to expand your taste palate, you will love it. I have seen many foreigners eat and enjoy the shrimp paste sauce a lot. If you are not a fan of this taste, you can order fish sauce or soya sauce to try this dish.
Beside this dish, the restaurant also has many other unique dishes from Ha Noi. So many famous Vietnamese singers, actors/actresses, artists have visited this restaurant to enjoy food here.
The Address & The Location
The address of this restaurant is at number 6, Hong Ha street, Ward 2, Tan Binh Dist., Ho Chi Minh city.
It’s location is close to the Tan Son Nhat airport of Ho Chi Minh city so it’s easy for tourists to visit every time they come or leave Ho Chi Minh city.
They also have 2 other addresses at:
-1 Nguyen Van Trang, Ben Thanh Ward, Dist.1, HCM city
-45A Hoa Lan, Ward 2, Dist. Phu Nhuan, HCM city
The Space & The Atmosphere
This restaurant stands in front of the big street and has a very local style.
The space inside is warm and cozy with some Ha Noi style decoration.
On the wall of stairs you will see many photos of famous Vietnamese singers, actors/actresses, artists who visited this restaurant.
The restaurant is spacious with 2 buildings and 2 floors. I prefer to eat at the open space on the second floor as it has a more relaxed feel.
The Menu & The Price
The menu is large and looks like a newspaper with introduction of the restaurant and all kinds of their unique aboriginal food.
You can zoom out more to see all the details of the the menu below.
Last time I came here with a friend and spent VND 294,000, that is about USD 12.5, for a full meal for two and we even got a free ice-cream as our bill was over VND 200,000. The ice-cream was quite ordinary, so you can skip that if you wish.
The Food and the Beverage
We ordered 3 main dishes: Salted chicken feet with lemongrass, lime and fresh chilli; Mixed combo; and Steamed mixed pig’s tripes. Tripe is a very Asian dish, served here with a Vietnamese style. All these foods are served on a lovely bamboo tray covered with a banana leaf as is the custom in the villages in Vietnam.
I like the “Salted chicken feet with lemongrass, lime and fresh chilli” dish because of the inviting smell of lemongrass and fish sauce. The sour taste of this dish is great as a starter and gets your taste buds ready for the courses to follow. They served this dish with pepper salt and green kumquat but I prefer chicken feet with the sour lemongrass fish sauce.
I always order the famous “Mixed combo of deep-fried tofu, steamed pork thigh meat and “chả cốm” served with fresh herb, rice noodle and shrimp paste sauce” dish.
“Chả cốm” is the countryside aboriginal food from Hanoi, made from young rice and pork. The taste of young rice is very special and one that I love.
Added with the shrimp paste sauce that you can mix with sugar, kumquat and fresh chilli to get the balance of taste that you want. I don’t use sugar, just kumquat and chilli to have great taste and smell.
The “Steamed mixed pig’s tripes” dish here was of good quality. I rarely eat tripe, but the tripe here was clean and safe to eat. All the herbs made the tripes taste more delicious.
And the dessert that I love to eat here every time I come is the “Fresh homemade yogurt with black sticky rice”. Even if I am full after the main dishes, I need to have this dessert on every visit. For me this dish is made perfectly. The black sticky rice is great here and not rough like other place, it has a slight aroma of alcohol and milky yogurt. Just mix it up with a little bit of ice and you can enjoy the combination of sweet, sour and rich tastes.
They still have many other special and unique Ha Noi food like Freshwater crab hot pot, Fried crab spring roll, Escargot and green banana dish, Shrimp cake, Dracontomelon juice, Fresh tofu with jasmine syrup … The food here is delicious, it will make you come back to visit many times to try all the various dishes on offer.
The Service
They open from 10am to 10pm to serve lunch and dinner.
The staff are quite fast and friendly.
You have to take the receipt from staff to come to check the bill at counter downstairs, that’s quite inconvenient for customers.
They charge VND 5000 for motorbike parking, it’s about USD 0.2 but I think it should be free of charge like many other restaurants.
Rate: 8/10
The food here is delicious with a unique Ha Noi style that it keeps me coming back many times in a month. I often recommend this restaurant to friends and family.
