Do you also feel like your days just fly by ? Do you feel like you get much less done than when you were younger ? Don't we all ?
"Where is my time ?"
When I was a kid days were extremely long. I went outside to play with my friends for 6 hours and those 6 hours felt like 2 days. Nowadays I spend 12 hours doing something and it feels like an hour...
It's really starting to weigh heavily on me, I have so many things I want to do, but I just give up, because I know that I won't be able to do them all. I feel like I spend more time on lamenting that I don't have time then actually doing things.
The more we live, the faster it gets
When you think about it, it kind of makes sense - when you are 10 years old, 1 year is a tenth of your life, but when you are 50, it's only 2% of your life. Imagine if people were able to live 1000s of years - a year would be like a week now !
Anticipation and retrospection
I came across a very interesting article by Philip Yaffe called "Why Does Time Go Faster As We Get Older?" .
It basically says that when you're looking forward to something, time seems to go by very slowly and once it's over, time just flies by.
I think that thought is very interesting and correct. Think about it - when you go to work on Monday, weekend looks so far away. But when weekend comes, it just flies away. This can be applied to major events too, like your holiday or wedding etc.
As we get older we accomplish more things and we keep looking back and thinking : "Wow, this was so long ago! We also have less to look forward to...
What to do when you feel like your precious time is getting lost
If you feel like an hour is only 15 minutes long and a day is only 8 hours, try stopping and doing nothing. Yeah that's right, do nothing at all - try staring at a clock for better effect. Wow a minute is suddenly an hour long !
...Ok, I admit that's pretty silly.
Manage time better
Wasting time is a stupid thing to do, especially when it flies by so quickly ! Think about what you do in a day and what you don't need to be doing. Watching TV is fun, but watching TV 6 hours a day is wasting time that you could use to do cool stuff like fighting bears or taming sharks.
Complaining that you need 48 hours in a day is also a surprisingly good way of wasting your life.
Quit doing things you hate
If you absolutely hate your work, you often wish your work day was over, correct ? If you work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, that's 40 hours a week you waste, you could have used those 40 hours to do things you love ! You're basically wishing your life was shorter !
I understand that you need money to survive, but do you really want to spend your life working a job you hate just to sustain a life you don't want ?
Quit living mindlessly
Do you often do things that don't really require your attention, so you zone out and do them automatically ?
Doing basic tasks in work, driving long distances, watching TV etc. I'm not saying this is 100% a bad thing, because our brains would get really tired if they had to focus all the time, I'm just saying if you do this 10 hours a day, it's no wonder your days fly by.
Let's all make a promise to ourselves that we will enjoy our lives a bit more from now on. YOLO !
That might be the first time I ever used YOLO...
