Cleaning up the Ocean on Mirabello Bay, Crete (Part 1)

At the end of July I was on vacation on the beautiful island of Crete. Not far from our villa booked with AirBNB there was a nice little corner with a public beach. We went to the Tholos Beach to swim a few hours relaxed in the sea and let the soul flow. Arriving there, you could already guess it. Here on the beach was already some plastic garbage, which was washed from the sea to the beach. After a first round of swimming in the bay, I could already see the first dimensions of the plastic garbage present there while swimming and snorkeling.

Ende Juli war ich zum Urlaub auf der schönen Insel Kreta unterwegs. Unweit von unserer bei AirBNB gebuchten Villa gab es eine schöne kleine Ecke mit einem öffentlichen Strand. Uns hat es zum Tholos Beach verschlagen um ein paar Stunden entspannt im Meer zu schwimmen und die Seele baumeln zu lassen. Dort angekommen, hat man es schon erahnen können. Hier am Strand lag schon einiges an Plastik Müll, welches aus dem Meer an den Strand gespült wurde. Nach einer ersten Runde schwimmen in der Bucht, konnte ich beim schwimmen und schnorcheln schon die ersten Ausmaße des dort vorhandenen Plastik Müll sehen.

Get into the ocean and get out the plastic trash

So let's go into the ocean and get the floating garbage out. Already during the first few meters I swam in, a large amount of plastic garbage was floating around. Most of the time I swam out about 50 to 100 meters and was able to pick up large pieces of plastic along the way. It was quite difficult to collect the floating garbage and to swim even further out. So then I changed my idea and just went into the ocean several times and got plastic out several times. As seen in the pictures ^{(Thanks to Hive account@rivalzzz, who took the photos of me with my camera, even if you can see my thick Corona belly :D)} it is already no small amounts of plastic garbage I found.

It was already a bigger challenge to swim back with the plastic in my hand. But fortunately I was at the time also not alone there on the road, because the dear Hive account@detlev with family was also there and has really helped diligently to get the garbage out of the sea.

Rein in den Ocean und den Plastik Müll rausholen

Also nichts wie rein in den Ozean und den herumschwimmenden Müll herausholen. Schon bei den ersten paar Metern, die ich reingeschwommen bin, hat sich ein großes Ausmaß an herumschwimmenden Plastik Müll gezeigt. Meistens bin ich so ca. 50 bis 100 Meter hinaus geschwommen und konnte unterwegs schon große Plastik-Stücke aufsammeln. Es war schon recht schwer den herumschwimmenden Müll einzusammeln und noch weiter raus zu schwimmen. Also hab ich dann meine Idee geändert und bin einfach mehrfach in den Ozean rein und mehrfach Plastik rausgeholt. Wie auf den Bildern zu sehen ^{(Vielen Dank an Hive account@rivalzzz, der mit meiner Kamera die Fotos von mir aufgenommen hat, auch wenn man meine dicke Corona Plautze sieht :D)} sind es schon keine kleinen Mengen an Plastik Müll die ich gefunden habe.

Es war schon eine größere Herausforderung mit dem Plastik in der Hand wieder zurück zu schwimmen. Aber zum Glück war ich zu dem Zeitpunkt auch nicht alleine dort unterwegs, denn der liebe Hive account@detlev mit Family war ebenfalls da und hat wirklich fleißig mitgeholfen den Müll aus dem Meer herauszuholen.

The weather was great and therefore we have certainly stayed about 4 hours there in the bay and again and again we went in the ocean and out again ;) Sometimes there was just so much trash washed up on the beach that even when you walk you run into plastic and it gets stuck on your foot. Interesting was also the finding of a ripped fishing net, which was washed up on the beach. In the picture below you can see a bracelet on my right wrist that was made by a fishing net - better said from a ghostnet. The company Bracenet makes these bracelets from fishing nets that are retrieved from the ocean to draw attention to the pollution of the oceans. Das Wetter war großartig und deshalb haben wir uns bestimmt rund 4 Stunden dort in der Bucht aufgehalten und immer wieder rein in den Ozean und wieder raus ;) Manchmal wurde einfach so viel Müll an den Strand gespült, das man selbst beim Laufen in Plastik läuft und dieses am Fuß hängen bleibt. Interessant war auch der Fund eines zerrissenen Fischernetzes, das an den Strand gespült wurde. Auf dem unteren Bild seht ihr an meinem rechten Handgelenk ein Armband, welches durch ein Fischernetz hergestellt wurde - Besser gesagt aus einem Ghostnet. Die Firma Bracenet stellt diese Armbänder von Fischernetzen, die aus dem Ozean geholt werden um auf die Verschmutzung der Ozeane hinzuweisen. And as you can see, it's not getting less plastic waste that I've taken out of the ocean. Even bigger plastic bags we found. At the beginning we put all the collected garbage on a pile on the beach.... There was really a big pile of garbage that we pulled out of the ocean with 6 people. It was also interesting to see that other beach visitors also collected garbage from the beach and ocean and disposed of it properly.

Und wie man sieht, wird es nicht weniger Plastikmüll, den ich aus dem Ozean geholt habe. Selbst größere Plastiktüten haben wir gefunden. Zum Anfang haben wir allen gesammelten Müll auf einen Haufen am Strand gelegt... Da hat sich schon echt ein großer Haufen an Müll angesammelt, den wir mit 6 Leuten aus dem Meer gezogen haben. Auch interessant mit anzusehen war, das andere Strandbesucher ebenfalls Müll vom Strand und Ozean gesammelt und fachgerecht entsorgt haben.

The solution was a big bag

So we didn't have to leave all the trash we collected on the beach and take it to the trash can by hand, we had a bit of luck. Unfortunately... or better said more badly than rightly came us the opportunity, which a gigantic plastic bag was washed up in the sea. Hive account@coolsurfer discovered this in the sea and I came to his aid to pull the bag ashore. The huge bag was filled with water and it took, I think, about 15 minutes to pull the bag ashore. After that, though, I was really exhausted and needed a break....

Now we had a big bag where we could put all the garbage we had collected. That was already a big relief to have a collected place where the garbage can go. We attached the bag to a tree, so that we could easily and comfortably throw in the collected garbage. Die Lösung war ein großer Sack

Damit wir den ganzen gesammelten Müll nicht am Strand liegen lassen mussten und von Hand in den Mülleimer bringen mussten, hatten wir etwas Glück im Unglück. Leider... oder besser gesagt mehr schlecht als Recht kam uns die Gelegenheit, das ein riesiger Plastiksack im Meer herangespült wurde. Hive account@coolsurfer hat diesen im Meer entdeckt und ich bin ihm dann zur Hilfe gekommen, den Sack an Land zu ziehen. Der riesen Sack war voll mit Wasser gefüllt und hat, ich glaube, ca. 15 Minuten gedauert, den Sack bis an Land zu ziehen. Danach war ich aber wirklich erschöpft und brauchte eine Pause...

Nun hatten wir einen großen Sack, wo wir sämtlichen gesammelten Müll rein tun konnten. Das war schonmal eine große Erleichterung, einen gesammelten Ort zu haben, wo der Müll hin kann. Befestigt haben wir den Sack an einem Baum, damit wir den gesammelten Müll einfach und bequem reinwerfen konnten. But we were also industrious directly on the beach and have picked up and disposed of plastic waste buried there by sand. Unfortunately, there was a really large amount of microplastic in the sea, which has settled on the whole body. The whole beach was full of many small pieces of hard plastic and also at the edge of the sea on the beach you could unfortunately see very clearly how great the extent of pollution in the seas is. It is very sad to see how much the sea is polluted by humans and that in such a beautiful place like Crete.

Through my experiences that I have made on site, I will now pay even more attention to avoid plastic waste, keep my eyes open for lying around garbage ... On the beach on site, the dear Hive account@detlev has also made a drone flight, where you could then see exactly how much polluted the bay is. Perhaps the Hive account@detlev is so dear and posts once the picture with the plastic garbage, where one sees, how this pulls itself like a road along the coast. Only for the sake of completeness.

Fleißig waren wir aber auch direkt am Strand und haben dort durch Sand vergrabenen Plastikmüll aufgehoben und entsorgt. Leider gab es im Meer eine richtig große Menge an Mikroplastik, welches sich am ganzen Körper abgesetzt hat. Der ganze Strand war voll mit vielen kleinen teilen von Hartplastik und auch am Meeresrand am Strand konnte man leider ganz genau erkennen, wie groß das Ausmaß der Umweltverschmutzung in den Meeren ist. Es ist schon sehr traurig mit anzusehen, wie sehr das Meer durch den Menschen verschmutzt wird und das an so einem schönen Ort, wie Kreta.

Durch meine Erlebnisse die ich vor Ort gemacht habe, werde ich nun noch mehr darauf achten, Plastikmüll zu vermeiden, meine Augen weiter offen halten für herumliegenden Müll... Am Strand vor Ort hat der liebe Hive account@detlev auch noch einen Drohenflug gemacht, wo man dann genau erkennen konnte, wie sehr verschmutzt die Bucht ist. Vielleicht ist der Hive account@detlev so lieb und postet einmal das Bild mit dem Plastik-Müll, wo man sieht, wie dieser sich wie eine Straße entlang der Küste zieht. Nur der Vollständigkeit halber.
