Yesterday, I presented the Postojna Cave in our country Slovenia, and mentioned the importance of this, that is the human fish (Latin name locus classicus) and belongs to the Proteus anguinus animal species or Slovenian human fish. The discovery of the human fish goes back to the beginnings of exploring the underground.

Janez Vajkard Valvasor 1689 described Slavic "dragon puppies" in the Glory of the Duke of Carniola. In 1768, it was scientifically described by J.N. Laurenti and named it Proteus anguinus. The human fish is 25 to 30 cm in length and considered to be the largest human fish in the world, it is the only kind in Europe and is a typical cave animal with no dark skin color and no eyes. When the larvae are visible, the skin is later swollen and overgrown. The light has a delicate whole body (dermatoptic sense), has a well-developed flair and taste, inner ear, and specialty are senses for the electric field. It has two pairs of weak legs, very apart, three fingers on the front and two fingers on the last pair, which are only auxiliary in movement. Breathes with outer gills that are vivid red. Men and women are slightly different in appearance.

There are two subspecies in Slovenia: white swamp ("Proteus anguinus anguinus" Laurenti 1768) and black swamp ("Proteus anguinus parkel" Sket & Arnzten 1994), which is known only from the Bela krajina karst.
