Monday Motivation
Welcome to the first installment of Monday Motivation here on my blog! Every Monday I share with you information that I learnt from reading books throughout the week, hopefully motivational!
This Mondays' book is The One Thing by Gary Keller.
What I would like to share from reading this book:
1 The one thing
The one thing is the best approach to getting what you want. Where id had huge success, I had narrowed my concentration to one thing, and where my success varied, my focus had too.
Finding the things that mattered most. How extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you can make your focus. Most people think the opposite: cluttered calendars, big to do lists, and try to do lots of things well. Unaware that success comes from doing a few things well. We only have so much time and energy that when we spread ourselves out, we spread ourselves very thin.
2 The domino effect
The world record for a domino fall was 4,491,863 dominos in an amazing display. In this instance, a single domino set in motion a domino fall that cumulatively toppled over the other 4.4million dominos. This equated to 94,000 joules of energy, enough to to do 545 push-ups, just from one small push.
Lorne Whitehead wrote in the American journal of physics, not only could dominos topple many things, they could topple bigger things. Up to 50% larger to be exact, but what does this mean? This is known as geometric progression. With a starting domino of 2 inches and increasing by 50% each time, by the 10th domino we are looking at over 6ft, by the 18th domino we are looking at The Leaning Tower of Pisa. 23rd: Eiffel tower, 31st: mount Everest. Domino number 57 would bridge the gap between the earth and the moon.
Getting extraordinary results is about creating a domino effect in your life. Line up these dominos for your life, find a lead domino and whack away until it falls. The key is over time, success is sequential one thing at a time.
3 Success leaves clues
Proof that the ONE thing is everywhere. One product, one service: KFC and chicken; Starbucks and coffee. Apple has always had their one products as well. One moments it’s the iPhone, then it’s the iPod, then it’s the iWatch. Each product entered the limelight as their one thing whilst the rest were moved to the discount shelves. If your company doesn’t know what its one thing is, then its one thing is to find out. One person. Sam Walton, Walmart. Walt Disney, Disney. Companies are associated to one particular person, but what all these people had in common was one person in their life acting as a mentor. Albert Einstein had Max Talmund. No one is self-made. One passion, one skill. We each have passions and skills, but you’ll see amongst extraordinary successful people with one intense emotion or learned ability that shines through.
4 Everything matters equally
Equality is a lie, things are never equal. How do we decide how to spend our time? We have such a large amount of choice; how do we make good ones? A lot of the time everything feels urgent. We become active and busy, but this doesn’t actually move us any closer to success. Achievers operate differently, achievers always work from a clear sense of priority. Priority can come from turning long to-do lists into shorter success lists and then onto a list where we may be left with our ONE thing.
