Living On The Beautiful Beaches In Da Nang Vietnam

I've been in Da Nang, Vietnam since January 1st, 2019 getting to know the people and the culture and find living here among the locals to be a rich experience. The people are very friendly, full of charm and laughter and welcoming.

I'm staying at a lovely hostel named Traveler's Nest Hostel and have become friends with the owners Sa and Hao and the rest of the staff here. The beds are super comfortable. They have private rooms but I'm staying in a shared dorm. Each bed has a pull-down blind for privacy, a fan and light, electrical outlets, a shelf for your computer and a lockable cabinet for personal stuff, very comfortable pillow, sheets, and comforter and everything is very clean.

There's AC in the room. They clean every day. The showers have plenty of hot water. There's a couple of indoor seating areas and outdoor balconies to hang out and the internet is fast and works everywhere in the building.

Each morning breakfast is included with a wide selection of fruit, eggs, cereal, and coffee or tea, and they'll do your laundry. How much does all this cost you may be asking yourself? $6 USD/night or 5.30 Euro. What a deal.

They have two hostels, one right on the beach and another about 5-minutes walk to the beach and a few minutes walk to the daily farmers market where you can buy fresh fruit, fish, crafts, and food.

Everything is very inexpensive here. Beer costs around 60 cents, a pack of cigarettes costs 50 cents, and there is plenty to eat for around 1 to 4 USD a meal depending on how fancy you want to get.

Right next door from the hostel a family cooks food on a BBQ grill and sells meals for less than a dollar. It's delicious and fresh off the grill. I've become a regular there. It's a funky place but the food is good and you can get it to go if you want.

Everyone rides motorbikes here and you can rent one for about 7 USD (6 Euro) for 24-hours with the price going down if you rent by the week or month. People drive on the right side of the road for the most part but there doesn't seem to be any traffic laws here. Going through a traffic circle is complete chaos with everyone going every direction imaginable. Once you get used to it you just go with the flow.

Da Nang has many beautiful bridges and one of the most famous ones is the new Golden Bridge that appears to be held up by hands.

Dragon Bridge in Da Nang, Vietnam

Vietnam is famous for its coffee which is very strong and available everywhere you go. One of my favorite places in Da Nang is a place called Sincero (Honest in Spanish) that plays great Latin music and makes delicious smoothies. Pineapple banana is my favorite.

It's right on the way to the beach and I'll usually stop there on the way back from the beach.

The white, sand beaches here are my favorite places to hang out and you can walk for miles on uninterrupted stretches of the coastline.

Wondering what awaits in those hills, the bike read my thoughts and seemed ready to find out. Making quick work of it as it glided along the perfectly smooth roads, the bike and I became one, racing away from the city below flying past the croaking frogs and rice paddies, through thickly forested hills and breathtaking vistas, round the winding roads and waterfalls, cutting through cool, floral-scented air pockets until we reached Doi Suthep.

Call me crazy but last week I flew to Bangkok, Thailand with nothing but a camera, half a suitcase of clothes, my trusty laptop, and an incurable case of wanderlust for new adventures. While that may seem impulsive to my close friends and family, some who've made their opinions concerning my sanity very clear, to me it's perfectly normal. Just west of the Chaing Mai University at the the base of the Doi Suthep mountains is the Chiang Mai Zoo and Aquarium, a 200 acre (81 hectares) zoo established in 1977. I'm not a big fan of zoos but when I was having lunch at a nearby place and heard a lion roaring in the forest my curiosity got the better of me. I spent a day visiting the place and snapping pictures.

Strolling through the Huay Kaew Arboretum in Chiang Mai, Thailand I imagined saving the world one forest at a time and stood in amazement under new-to-me trees, basking in hungry curiosity for this novel biosphere. Most of the trees in these parts are hosts to a wide variety of orchids growing on their trunks

Drinking mushroom shakes, buying joints at the bar (you have to smoke them here. That's the rule). Eating Pad Thai, drinking Chang beer and watching hippie chicks hoolahoop to lounge music. Another hard day at the office.
