On the 24th of January 1859, Alexandru Ioan Cuza is chosen to be rule over Wallachia bt the deputies from the elective gathering of Bucharest, after becoming the ruler of Moldova on the 5th of January. The Small Uinion represented a coplex procces, based on the strong cultural and economical similarities between the two regions.
The aftermath of the Union was a gamechanger. It wasn't just about swapping the rulers anymore, but about a new page of national history. A new era of acomplishments had begun, wich opened the path that enabled the evolution of the country, and offered the opportunity to obtain the independence (1877) and the making of the Big Union (1918).
The goal of uniting the romanians into one state was acomplished on the 1st of December, 1918, when the regions united: Transilvania, Banat, Crișana an Maramureș.
The decision of 1859 defied the intention of the great powers, whom have demanded that the union should have been just administrative. Precisely, the 2 principates to have similar institutions, 2 rulers, 2 governments, 2 parlaments with only one High Court Of Cassation and Justice, at Focșani. The double election of Alexandru Ioan Cuza rezulted in the making of one state. Two years later, the administration of the ruler, unifies the institutions and the Union became a real thing.
Therefore, today we mark the 159th anniversary of the Small Union.
