Some small photography experiments…
I did not go outside for these shots. Most of them were created at home with simple objects, lights and little imagination. Sometimes I enjoy this kind of process more because it feels like making instead of “taking photographs”.
First two photographs are connected with each other. I tried to express screen addiction and isolation feeling. The blue light of the phone was enough to create cold atmosphere already. I used a blue filter in front of the flash light to extend the color. The grid at the back is actually a bed sheet. I thought the grid structure can represent pixels on the screen. I applied pixeleration effect over the shadow to strengthen the dissolution of identity.
On the second image I used a wooden mannequin and employed a zoom blur. I wanted the figure to look like pulled toward the screen, almost losing balance and control. I thought blue color can symbolize dead battery. The mannequin holds the charging cable, in panic. Also the posture gave a sense of prayer, craving for the screen to come back.
Third image is more abstract. It is inspired by the idea that screens can become like a black hole. Endless scrolling, endless videos, endless information… and suddenly hours disappear. I wanted colorful RGB pixels to feel attractive like candies but also dangerous at the same time. Like something hypnotizing. And this is actually microscopic photograph of a mobile phone screen, and manipulated digitally.
The fourth image is a double exposure experiment with a small angel decoration inside a jar. This one is quieter compared to others. It gives me a strange feeling between isolation and innocence. I felt like innocence can only be sustained in an isolated environment. I like how imperfect and soft it looks.
Last photograph was maybe the simplest setup but also one of the most fun. I placed different small objects behind paper and used light to create silhouettes. The little figure and house shape started to look like a scene from an old fairy tale or maybe a childhood memory. It reminded me how photography can transform ordinary things into something different with only shadow and light.
All the best…
