Hello friends, today I want to share with you my memories of childhood and adolescence, when I used to go with my parents to the video stores, the same ones that unfortunately have almost entirely disappeared worldwide because of streaming, but still, at least to me, I still find them fascinating.
Hola amigos, hoy quiero compartir con ustedes mis recuerdos de niñez y adolescencia, cuando solía ir con mis padres a los videoclubs, los mismos que lamentablemente han desaparecido casi en su totalidad a nivel mundial a causa del streaming, pero que aún así, al menos a mí, me siguen pareciendo fascinantes.
I was a kid in the nineties, and I remember that at that time I used to wait anxiously every Friday for my dad to come home from work with treats and some rented movies from the video store, he usually brought a couple of children's movies for me and some for him and my mum. I remember the movies were in VHS format, haha and I also remember the tape rewinder we had which made things easier for us. The rewinder we had at home was very similar to this one.
Yo era una niña en la década de los noventa, y recuerdo que en esa época yo solía esperar con ansias todos los viernes a que mi papá llegara del trabajo con golosinas y algunas películas rentadas del videoclub, usualmente traía un par de películas infantiles para mí y algunas para él y mi mamá. Recuerdo que las películas estaban en formato VHS, jaja y también recuerdo el rebobinador de cintas que teníamos el cuál nos facilitaba las cosas. El rebobinador que teníamos en casa era muy parecido a éste.
I know that nowadays thanks to the internet and the various streaming platforms we can watch almost any film, even if it is still in theatres, unlike before when we had to wait for films to be released and finally appear in VHS format and later on DVD and Blue Ray in order to rent or buy them, however I think nothing compares to the exciting feeling I had when my parents took me to the video store and told me to pick a couple of films.... Wow! Seeing myself surrounded by so many covers, picking them up to read the synopsis of each film, the smell in the air... I feel like it was wonderful.
Sé que hoy en día gracias a internet y a las diversas plataformas de Streaming podemos ver casi cualquier película, incluso si todavía está en cartelera, a diferencia de antes que había que esperar a que las películas salieran de cartelera y aparecieran finalmente en formato de VHS y posteriormente en DVD y Blue Ray para para poder rentarlas o comprarlas, sin embargo creo que nada se compara con la sensación emocionante que me embargaba cuando mis padres me llevaban al videoclub y me decían que escogiera un par de películas... ¡Wow! verme rodeada de tantas portadas, tomarlas para leer la sinopsis de cada película, el olor que había en el ambiente... siento que era maravilloso.
On one occasion I remember, when I was about five or six years old, I left the shop very happy because my parents bought me a collection of Cuddly Bears films, of which I was a fan. It was a small suitcase with a lot of Care Bears drawings, and inside were not only the films in VHS format, but there was a surprise, some moulds and Play Doh pots, it was exactly like that.
En una ocasión recuerdo, cuando tenía unos cinco o seis años, salí de la tienda muy feliz porque mis padres me compraron una colección de películas de los ositos cariñosos, de los cuales yo era fan. Se trataba de una pequeña maleta con muchos dibujos de los ositos cariñosos, y en el interior no solo estaban las películas en formato VHS, sino que había una sorpresa, algunos moldes y botes de Play Doh, era exactamente así.
Time goes by inevitably, technology is constantly evolving and we are changing our way of thinking too, but when we look back and remember things like this (those of us who are lucky enough to have lived moments like these) we realize how happy we were, video stores were not only places to rent or buy movies, they were places where you could meet new people and discuss your favourite movies with them while looking them in the eye over a snack, they were places where you could meet new people and discuss your favourite films with them while you looked them in the eye over a snack, you could even meet the love of your life there, or just have a good time with your family on a weekend, sometimes there were even special events inside the videoclubs.
El tiempo pasa inevitablemente, la tecnología evoluciona constantemente y nosotros vamos cambiando también nuestra forma de pensar, pero cuando miramos al pasado y recordamos cosas como éstas (los que tenemos la dicha de haber vivido momentos como esos) nos damos cuenta de lo felices que éramos, los videoclubs no solo eran lugares para rentar o comprar películas, eran lugares donde podías conocer a nuevas personas y comentar tus películas favoritas con ellos mientras los mirabas a los ojos tomando algún tentempié, allí podías incluso conocer al amor de tu vida, o simplemente pasarla bien con tu familia algún fin de semana, incluso a veces se hacían eventos especiales dentro de los videoclubes.
Well, my film-loving friends, I hope you liked my post, maybe some of you didn't know the video stores, but others may feel the same nostalgia as I do when remembering them, fortunately they haven't disappeared completely, there are still some rare specimens in the world that have survived despite the rise of streaming platforms.
Y bien, mis amigos amantes del cine, espero que les haya gustado mi post, quizá algunos de ustedes no hayan conocido los videoclubs, pero otros tal vez sientan la misma nostalgia que yo al recordarlos, afortunadamente no han desaparecido por completo, todavía quedan algunos raros especímenes en el mundo y que han sobrevivido a pesar del auge de las plataformas streaming.
