Deepak Chopra once wrote something to the effect that “Addiction is essentially a search for ecstasy.” In these first two lines from his hallmark song “Heroin,” Lou expresses that truism so perfectly and honestly.
The junkie does not know exactly what he wants or where he’s going, but he realizes that he wants ecstasy, nirvana, the kingdom. And if a powerful narcotic can help him on his quest, it’s probably worth trying.
