“Yun Na Mil Mujhe Se (Part 1)” (2009)

This song is derived from a “ghazal” by the Urdu poet Ehsan Danish, who became known as the “Poet of the Workmen.” A ghazal is a traditional Arabic, bluesy love poem of sorts, typically expressing both the pain of lost love and the joy of love – regardless of and beyond the pain.

This performance was for Zeshan’s senior recital at Northwestern University. While Zeshan is a multi-instrumentalist, he only sang during this recital. _{(Image source)}

Zeshan Bagewadi, aka Zeshan B

The Chicago native Zeshan Bagewadi is a singer-songwriter who has become well-known as a singer of soul music. Nevertheless, his portfolio stretches far beyond what we know of as soul – to classical music and Hindustani classical.

Consequently, Zeshan’s brand of soul encompasses everything from the dynamic sounds of ‘60s soul to the impassioned vocals of traditional desi soul from the Indian subcontinent. According to him, it comprises a new genre of “brown-skinned soul.” In 2017, Zeshan was featured in Rolling Stone magazine’s “10 New Artists You Need to Know: April 2017."
