The Puff Adder - One of South Africa's Deadly Dozen Snakes - The snake that bites more people in South Africa than any other dangerous snake.
There are a few reasons why this Snake bites more people than any other dangerous snake in South Africa.
- It is the only dangerous snake found throughout South Africa, only absent from the highest of mountain ranges and the desert area of the West Coast .
- It lives on the ground, rely's on it's camouflage to not be seen and so is often stood on.
- If agitated it will strike readily with force.
In this photo the long fangs are shown. These fangs grow so long that they fold up against the top of the mouth when at rest. When the snake strikes, as the snake opens it's mouth, the fangs swing around and stab the victim.
Not all bites from a Puff Adder result in death.
