In this report I cover the early market activity from London on Tuesday, May 8th, 2018. I look briefly at the precious metals, the stock market, the dollar and the oil market.
In the second part of this report I look at how Hong Kong was transformed from a backwater or"barren island" after the second World War into a thriving metropolis and global financial center. I look closely at Sir John Cowperthwaite, Hong Kong deputy administrator and financial secretary from 1951 to 1971, and how his policies of laissez faire, small government and the rule of law helped make Hong Kong the prosperous place it is today.
The example of Hong Kong shows how freedom and free markets raised Hong Kong's GDP per capita from less than a quarter of Britain's in the early 1960s to more than 40% of Britain by 2015.
