'Whimpering dog ' in my Desirable Pearls - 11

Once, a man passed by the house and saw the older couple resting on the porch. Between them lay a dog and whined.

The man was surprised, but he did not say anything. The next day, the story repeated: the man again passed by this house, the older couple rested in their rocking chairs, the dog lay in the same place and whined. The man decided that if the next day he saw the same scene again and he heard the dog whining, he would ask what was going on. On the third day, the man sees the same sight: the old lady drinks tea, the older man reads the newspaper, and the dog lies between them and whines. The man could not take it anymore and asked:

• Excuse me, what's up with your dog?
• With a dog? - replied the old lady. - The dog lies on a nail protruding from veranda boards.
  Astonished at her answer, the man asked:
• If the dog is lying on a nail and suffers, why not get up and do not lie down elsewhere?
  The old lady smiled and replied:
• It means that it hurts enough to whimper, but not enough to move out of place ...
