Późne odkrycie
The existence of the temple was found out only in 1814, when, on the initiative of the British governor Thomas Stamford, Raffles was discovered. During his trip around Java, he heard about a great structure hidden somewhere in the jungle. So he sent a search mission, which was successful in finding the temple. There was a period of cleaning the building, but the work was stopped for fear of collapsing this beautiful find.
O istnieniu świątyni dowiedziano się dopiero w 1814 roku, kiedy to z inicjatywy brytyjskiego gubernatora Thomasa Stamforda Raffles została odkryta. W swojej podróży po Jawie usłyszał o wielkiej budowli schowanej gdzieś w dżungli. Wysłał więc misję poszukiwawczą, której powiodło się odnalezienie świątyni. Nastąpił okres oczyszczania budowli, ale z obawy przed zawalaniem tego przepięknego znaleziska przerwano prace.
Over the years, the building was covered with volcanic ash from numerous eruptions of the Merapi volcano and overgrown with jungle. Only in 1835, excavations were resumed, the entire temple was excavated and renovated, which, moreover, continues to this day.
Z biegiem lat budowla została przykryta pyłem wulkanicznym pochodzącym z licznych erupcji wulkanu Merapi oraz porośnięta dżunglą. Dopiero w 1835 roku wznowiono prace wykopaliskowe, całą świątynię odkopano i poddano renowacji, która zresztą trwa do dzisiaj.
In 1991, this building was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In November 2010, the re-eruption of Merapk Volcano covered the structure with a layer of volcanic ash about 2.5 cm thick, but the problem was dealt with rapidly.

To this day, no records and information have been found as to the purpose and by whom the temple was built. One thing for sure is that most of the temples in central Java were suddenly abandoned under mysterious circumstances.

The first is the Kamadhatu (the so-called lust zone) is on the lowest level, which contains 160 reliefs depicting earthly enjoyment, perhaps symbolizing the vulgarisms of the earth and the associated consequences after death.

Square terraces are perhaps the most spectacular in this whole structure. Reliefs depicting the journey Sudhana traveled to attain enlightenment are found on the walls and on the balustrades.
