My daughter likes to play games on Roblox, which is a virtual reality platform pretty much like Minecraft. Each player has a space of their own into which they can invite others and build stuff out of blocks or other things manually or using a script language. The players can communicate with one another using a chat functionality. Assets created by the players can be traded using the platform's internal currency, Robux. It has an exchange rate against the dollar.
Steem is a similar collection of digital spaces that allows the users to interact with each other by writing posts and comments or by helping to rank order the posts. There are also games that use the platform. The players can earn digital coins native to the platform through their activities. Steem is a not a corporation or a legal entity of any kind but a digital entertainment platform, the key components of which (witness nodes and other nodes) are owned by individuals or corporations.

See section 2.7 as it applies to Steem as a platform [Edit: Good news].
