I knew that the magpie wanted to steal the egg and the chick. But I have never seen such a persistent magpie.
She is wary as soon as one of the household members is in the yard she flies out of the yard. Several times my wife and I have caught her coming out of the henhouse carrying eggs in her beak. She breaks the egg and carries it with the lower part of her beak. Several times she even dropped the egg.
I don't know if she ever had a fight with the rooster, but the hens have a hole to go out into the yard for them so they don't really see the coop unless they're in it.
And our magpie probably uses that while the hens are away.
The wife tried to scare her with bags that she hung around the chicken coop, she made a scarecrow, but that didn't help either. She even put a hat on her head.
We also hung up some old CDs. The refracted light helped us keep the sparrows away from one part of the yard. We'll see if that helps with the magpie.
Perhaps the location of the chicken coop itself helps our thief. The chicken coop is in the lower part of the yard, right next to the garden.
I decided to make it even harder for our thief. We have a wooden door on the chicken coop, in the evening we had to close the chickens because of the weasel. And in the morning we let the chickens out and the door is open all day. I decided not to open the door, but to cut a hole at the bottom of the door
And I added a piece of mesh for shade to that little entrance. I hope I won't confuse the chickens :) I'll have to keep an eye on the events in the chicken coop and this evening I'll place a masonry block over that little opening.
Since I was cutting with a jig saw, which is noisy, the chickens got a little scared and knocked down the sleeping ladder.
Well, I hope we can drive the thief away from our chicken coop. I'm not a fan of extreme methods. Slingshots, rocks or air rifles. I still think we can outsmart these annoying thieves.
Thanks for reading.
Until next time.
Stay healthy.
