I was in the market one Saturday morning, I didn't plan to stay long because I only have few things to buy, I thought I would meet those women selling fish and pepper at the entrance of the gate, buy what i want to buy and disappear.
But on getting to the market, the women were nowhere to be found, so surprising. The few that dropped their goods weren't there with it.
So,I decided to just step in to either call the attention of those who have their wares outside or find someone else to buy from inside the market.
On getting in, I saw how scanty the market was, this is a market day...and markets on day's like this are always busy. But this is different, what could be happening. I saw people talking in corners, in groups and all.
Then I noticed a place at the far end of the market, the place was filled with people. As I was making my way down to the place to check what was happening, I overheard two women talking... They were talking about the crowded place, then I heard them make mention of "selling memory,"
I just laughed it off and was about to turn back, cause to me I felt it was memory card they were talking about, I just thought maybe they were dashing out memory cards or selling it at a very low price. Just as I was about to turn back, I heard something... Millions of naira.
What.... What sort of memory is dad. I made my way down to the place to get a full understanding of what's going on. On getting there I was made to know it wasn't memory cards, but that people were actually there to sell their memories.
I was forced to ask some questions, even though I didn't get anyone to give me an answer.... What do they use the memory they buy for? Why are they buying it?.... That and many more were the questions I asked.
I stayed to watch and I saw how people were actually selling their memories. Funniest part is you can choose which to sell... Either to sell away your first five years, or 10, or more or all....
Those who sell a part of it aren't much, most of the people there are selling it all, because the more you sell, the bigger the money.
And immediately they sell it off, they walk away, like a living dead. They don't even know how they got there again, they don't know anything anymore.... So, what then is the use of selling when you're left empty.
One of their people walked up to me, told me she's seeing and noticing something in me, that I have some very emotional story, and that they buy such differently too. She came with an offer, one to big for me to handle, Avery tempting one.
850Million naira .. in this economy. I should sell some part of my memories for that...well, I almost did. But upon looking at the faces of those who had sold there's, I said how incomplete and empty they look.
I don't want to look like that.
Some things like our memories are just too expensive to sell, we can't trade them for money
