Scams are everywhere today, and if we are not very careful and watchful, we can fall for it. Especially online, where we kind of find it a little hard to tell what is true from what's false.
We now see various things online, ranging from fake investments platform, to ponzi sites, and a lot more. And it just seems this scammers are getting smarter by the day, cause most of us keeps falling for them, when we seem to have known their pattern, they come in another that's so real..and we fall again.
The funniest part is, the economy is hard on everyone and we all are kind of finding a means to at least survive, that they knew as well, and they are making the best use of the desperations of people.
This year February, I also fell victim of one, here on hive. It was just a few days to my birthday. And even though the money involved is small, I felt it, because I was so so broke at that time. I blamed myself for it, I shouldn't have clicked on the link I didn't verify and ask others about, it promises some sort of rewards and I clicked. That particular experience has made me more careful about a lot of things, especially links. I no longer click on links anyhow, even if its coming from someone I knew.
And that's the thing about these online scammers, they don't just target people who are careless, they also know how to take advantage of trust, sites, emotions, and such... they just need to make it look like what you would have loved.
Sometimes last month, I heard people talking about a particular site, how they've invested in it and are cashing out of it. People patronized this site like, even secondary school students registered..and the rate at which people were cashing out and investing made more people believe in it.
Less than two weeks ago, it crashed, and w began hearing stories of those who invested in it, cashed out and invested more again, we heard of those who lost huge amounts and act as if they didn't even invest in it. I even heard about a man who usually helps people to get ram for festivals and he has collected millions on naira for this upcoming ileya festival(Eid celebration), he invested all of this money into the platform thinking it would triple in two weeks time, well before then the site stopped working.
This issue isn't a small one, like it affects a lot of people, some victims of this things are in the hospital as I speak and some like the man who collected money for rams has fled the community already.
So, to avoid being scammed, we need to be wary of links. Verify a site very well before doing anything on it, don't trust all this get rid quick and quick money platforms. Also, don't share your sensitive information carelessly or litter it around, and make use of two factor authentication on all of your accounts, it goes a long way in helping.
Here's my advice, in as much as we all agree that we take risks and that life itself is a risk, I will like to add that its better to be careful and watchful as it is better to miss out on an opportunity than to lose your whole life savings and peace all together.
