Our friends Rob and Natalie had the idea of greeting the new year with a walk to the top of Thorpe Cloud, a famous steep limestone hill in the White Peak, at Dovedale, Derbyshire.
We set off from home while it was still dark, with flasks of hot chocolate, to meet our friend Jenny at the car park close by to Thorpe Cloud.
The climb was much steeper than I remembered, but then I was quite a lot younger last time I climbed Thorpe Cloud!
The view from the top was panoramic and we were lucky that the weather was dry, and that although there were a few clouds it didn't spoil our experience of the sunrise.
Coming down was a lot easier than climbing up, and my husband felt this was best achieved by 'fell running' his way down!
The White Peak limestone hills and steep valleys are very beautiful and this was a great way to welcome in 2018!
