Linguistics is the scientific and systematic study of human language, i.e. function and structure. Linguistics may be defined as the science of language. In linguistics, we study two things: language and scientific. Language is a medium of communication. It is the expression of ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Scientific indicates objectivity, systematically, exactness, precision and empirical. Knowledge of linguistics is helpful to learn the internal structure of a language.
Linguistics discusses a lot about the structure of a language that is the grammar and the phonological system of a language: how language functions, how words are constructed, how certain sounds of language are pronounced, how the sentences are formed and interpreted etc.
As said in the first line linguistic is the scientific study of human language. As knowledge of linguistics is helpful to learn the internal structure of a language, which is part science. And all the other sectors that is under the discussion of linguistics are part of science. So, linguistics has all the quality of science. That is why linguistics is called a science.
It is believed that humans are the only species that has a language of their own. Many people believe that other animals has there language too. But that’s not true. It is true that other species can communicate with each other, but it can not be called language. If a communication medium needs to be called as a language, it needs to have a few qualities. The most important one is that through a language the species should be able to describe past events as well as memories, or places. Only humans can use their language to refer to past events or different places. Other animals can communicate but they can’t do this. That’s why its said that language is human. Which means only humans have language.
