Hello, another day, another coin. Today I’d like to show you another half-silver coin, but from a different country – communist Hungary, to be precise. I bought it as part of a batch of coins from a market stall. I plan to go back there tomorrow and see if the gentleman is still there. I’ll try to get his phone number, which might lead to a longer-term collaboration. I like making contacts, even the smallest ones in the world of coin collecting. Hungary 5 Forint 1947
This is a Hungarian 5-forint coin from 1947, a very interesting period, as formally we still have the Hungarian Republic here, but the political climate of the region after the Second World War was already being heavily shaped by a brutal new order, which is why such coins fit very well with my theme of post-war half-silver coins from countries that were already falling into the orbit of the communist system at that time. On the obverse we see Lajos Kossuth, one of the most important figures in Hungarian history, a man associated above all with the Hungarian Revolution and the struggle for independence; so the figure on the coin is no accident, as the Hungarians were very keen to invoke such national symbols, and the revolutionary theme was very convenient for the communists. The coin may not be some great rarity, but in my opinion it is very pleasing, as it is a good size, is made of silver, features a simple yet distinct portrait, and comes from a period that has recently been of growing interest to me: post-war silver from Red Central and Eastern Europe.
On the reverse, we see the denomination of 5 forints, the date 1947 and the inscription ‘Magyar Köztársaság’, meaning the Republic of Hungary, and the whole design is executed in a fairly simple, official style, without any excessive embellishment, yet it still looks better than many later aluminium or copper-nickel coins. My specimen is already quite worn, with scratches, scuffs and that characteristic look of old silver that has been in circulation, but having bought it from a market stall at a price close to that of silver, this doesn’t bother me at all, because you buy such coins partly for the metal, partly for the history, and partly because it’s simply nice to have them in your collection. It’s worth mentioning that the 1947 5-forint coin was struck in 500-fine silver, so here we have my favourite ‘half-silver’ coin again – a coin that may not contain a huge amount of pure silver, but is still not just an ordinary modern coin, and you can feel in your hand that you’re dealing with something older and more substantial. I like shopping like this, because sometimes, amongst the usual lot from a market stall, you come across something like this – perhaps not an expensive numismatic item, but one that complements a collection well and showcases a piece of the country’s history, which isn’t collected quite as often in Poland as Germany, Russia or the UK. Another advantage of such coins is the price; you can buy many of them and build a nice silver collection.

Witam, kolejny dzień, to kolejna moneta. Dziś chciałbym przedstawić kolejne półsreberko, ale z innego kraju, a dokładniej z komunistycznych Węgier. Kupiłem ją razem z lotem monet ze straganu. Jutro planuję znowu tam pojechać i zobaczyć czy ten pan dalej tam jest. Spróbuję jeszcze zgarnąć numer telefonu, dzięki czemu może wyniknie jakaś dłuższa współpraca. Lubię robić sobie kontakty, nawet te najmniejsze w świecie zbieractwa monet. Zdjęcia zrobione są w otoczce ze złota Morza Bałtyckiego, czyli bursztynu. Zapraszam!
Węgry 5 Forintów 1947
Jest to węgierska moneta o nominale 5 forintów z 1947 roku, czyli z bardzo ciekawego okresu, bo formalnie mamy tutaj jeszcze Republikę Węgierską, ale klimat polityczny tego regionu po II wojnie światowej był już mocno ustawiany przez brutalny nowy porządek, dlatego takie monety bardzo dobrze pasują mi do tematu powojennych półsreberek z krajów, które już wtedy wpadały w orbitę czerwonego systemu komunistycznego. Na awersie widzimy Lajosa Kossutha, czyli jedną z najważniejszych postaci węgierskiej historii, człowieka kojarzonego przede wszystkim z rewolucją węgierską i walką o niezależność, więc sama postać na monecie nie jest przypadkowa, bo Węgrzy bardzo chętnie odwoływali się do takich symboli narodowych, a temat rewolucyjny był bardzo wygodny dla komuchów. Moneta nie jest może jakimś wielkim rarytasem, ale moim zdaniem jest bardzo przyjemna, ponieważ ma dobry rozmiar, jest srebrna, ma prosty, ale konkretny portret i jest z tego okresu, który ostatnio coraz bardziej mnie interesuje, czyli powojenne srebro z czerwonej Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej.
Na rewersie widzimy nominał 5 forintów, datę 1947 oraz napis Magyar Köztársaság, czyli Republika Węgierska, a całość jest zrobiona w takim dość prostym, państwowym stylu, bez przesadnego kombinowania, ale nadal wygląda to lepiej niż wiele późniejszych monet aluminiowych czy miedzioniklowych. Mój egzemplarz jest już dość mocno zmęczony, ma rysy, przetarcia i ten charakterystyczny wygląd starego srebra po obiegu, ale przy zakupie ze straganu i cenie zbliżonej do srebra kompletnie mi to nie przeszkadza, bo takie krążki kupuje się trochę dla metalu, trochę dla historii, a trochę dlatego, że po prostu fajnie mieć je w kolekcji. Warto wspomnieć, że 5 forintów z 1947 roku było bite w srebrze próby 500, więc znowu mamy tutaj moje ulubione półsreberko, czyli monetę, która może nie ma w sobie ogromnej ilości czystego srebra, ale nadal nie jest zwykłym współczesnym bilonem i w ręce czuć, że mamy do czynienia z czymś starszym oraz konkretniejszym. Lubię takie zakupy, bo czasami wśród zwykłego lotu ze straganu trafi się właśnie coś takiego, co nie jest może drogim numizmatem, ale dobrze uzupełnia kolekcję i pokazuje kawałek historii kraju, który w Polsce nie jest aż tak często zbierany jak Niemcy, Rosja czy Wielka Brytania. Kolejnym plusem takim monet jest cena, można kupić wiele takich monet i zbudować ładną srebrną kolekcję.
