Hello, another day, another coin. Today I have something small and a bit exotic. It is a 1/4 gulden from the Dutch East Indies from 1939. The coin is small, because it is not some big piece of silver, but when you sit in coins for a while, pieces like this also start to do their job. I bought it at St. Dominic’s Fair in Gdańsk, more as a curiosity and as something to add to the collection, because sometimes it is good to have something outside typical Europe. Enjoy!

Dutch East Indies 1/4 Gulden 1939

This is a 1/4 gulden from 1939, struck for the Dutch East Indies. Today this is the area of Indonesia, but back then it was a Dutch colony and because of that the coin looks a bit different than ordinary European small change. I will not write fairy tales that this is some great treasure, because it is not. It is a small silver coin, the kind of thing that could easily be thrown into a box and forgotten. But when you stop for a moment, it gets more interesting. We have the year 1939, so the world is already standing on the edge of war, and somewhere far away such a small gulden is still working in circulation. Normal money for normal life. Someone could have paid with it for some everyday things and that is it. No great history written in golden letters. These kinds of coins also make sense, because not everything has to be a thaler, a rouble, or a big Polish silver denomination from the Second Polish Republic. Sometimes such a small colonial coin shows more of the world than a big coin from a well known country. Here we have the Netherlands, but not exactly the Netherlands. There is a European coat of arms, there is a crown, but on the other side we have inscriptions unreadable for most Europeans, which straight away show that this coin was made for a completely different world and completely different people. That is what I like about it, just like that :)

On one side we have the coat of arms under a crown, the inscription NEDERL INDIE, the denomination 1/4 G and the year 1939. It looks quite official and without any messing about. The Dutch put their symbols there and that is it. The other side is more interesting for me, because we have an inscription in Arabic script and the whole thing already looks much less European. It is maybe not a coin where you sit with your mouth open, but it has some character. Small, silver, different. My example looks quite good, the details are readable and you do not have to guess what it is. Obviously the photo makes the subject a bit bigger, because in hand this is a small coin. The weight is only 3.18 g, the diameter is just under 19 mm, so there are no miracles here when it comes to weight. This is not a coin you pick up and say “oh, what a piece of silver”. More like a small silver token of history, except that it was actually normal money. And that is quite nice, to be honest. Pieces like this fill the collection well, because not everything has to be big and expensive. Sometimes it is worth having something small, something that looks different from the rest. It fits the album, the pre war year is there, silver is there, a bit of exotica is there. I have no problem with that.

Witam, kolejny dzień, to kolejna moneta. Dziś mam coś małego i trochę egzotycznego. Jest to 1/4 guldena z Holenderskich Indii Wschodnich z 1939 roku. Moneta niby drobna, bo to nie jest żaden wielki krążek srebra, ale jak się trochę posiedzi w monetach, to takie sztuki też zaczynają robić robotę. Kupiłem ją na targach dominikańskich w Gdańsku bardziej jako ciekawostkę i uzupełnienie kolekcji, bo czasem dobrze mieć coś spoza typowej Europy. Zapraszam!

Holenderskie Indie Wschodnie 1/4 guldena 1939

Jest to 1/4 guldena z 1939 roku, wybite dla Holenderskich Indii Wschodnich. Dziś to teren Indonezji, ale wtedy była to kolonia holenderska i właśnie przez to moneta wygląda trochę inaczej niż zwykłe europejskie drobniaki. Nie będę pisał bajek, że jest to jakaś wielka perełka, bo nie jest. To mały srebrny krążek, który łatwo byłoby wrzucić do pudełka i zapomnieć. Ale jak się człowiek zatrzyma na chwilę, to robi się ciekawiej. Mamy rok 1939, czyli świat już stoi na progu wojny, a tam gdzieś daleko funkcjonuje sobie taki drobny gulden. Normalny pieniądz do normalnego życia. Ktoś mógł nim płacić za jakieś codzienne rzeczy i tyle. Bez wielkiej historii pisanej złotymi literami. Właśnie takie monety też mają sens, bo nie wszystko musi być talarem, rublem albo polskim srebrnym dużym nominałem z II RP. Czasem taki mały kolonialny pieniądz pokazuje więcej świata niż duża moneta z dobrze znanego państwa. Tutaj mamy Holandię, ale jednak nie do końca Holandię. Jest europejski herb, jest korona, ale z drugiej strony mamy niezrozumiałe dla europejczyków napisy, które od razu mówią, że ta moneta była robiona pod zupełnie inny świat i zupełnie innych ludzi. To mi się w niej podoba, tak po prostu :)

Na jednej stronie mamy herb pod koroną, napis NEDERL INDIE, nominał 1/4 G oraz rok 1939. Wygląda to dość urzędowo i bez cudowania. Holendrzy dali swoje znaki i tyle. Druga strona jest dla mnie ciekawsza, bo mamy napis w piśmie arabskim i całość wygląda już dużo mniej europejsko. Nie jest to może moneta, przy której człowiek siedzi z otwartą buzią, ale ma klimat. Mała, srebrna, inna. Mój egzemplarz wygląda całkiem dobrze, szczegóły są czytelne, nie trzeba zgadywać co to jest. Wiadomo, zdjęcie trochę powiększa temat, bo w ręce to jest mały krążek. Waga to tylko 3,18 g, średnica niecałe 19 mm, więc cudów wagowych tutaj nie ma. To nie jest moneta, którą człowiek bierze do ręki i mówi „o, ale kawał srebra”. Raczej taki drobny srebrny żetonik historii, tylko że normalnie był pieniądzem. I to jest w sumie fajne. Takie sztuki dobrze uzupełniają kolekcję, bo nie wszystko musi być wielkie i drogie. Czasem warto mieć coś małego, co wygląda inaczej niż reszta. Do albumu pasuje, rok przedwojenny jest, srebro jest, egzotyka jest. Ja nie mam z tym problemu.
