The rhythms of Ghana's street life can't be ignored. When I visited recently, I couldn't help but get caught up in the day-to-day flow of the people bringing the streets to life. The streets of Ghana are full of energy, full of resilience, and full of continuous activity — each moment has a story.
As I walked through the streets, I saw how much order existed within the apparent chaos. Whether it was early morning or late in the night, street vendors placed themselves in strategic positions to move through traffic while others set up in busy areas. Each vendor had a way of doing things. Although it didn't appear as such at first glance, there was definitely a system to everything.
I thought what made these vendors so impressive was the amount of effort put into everything they did. Many work long hours while hauling products around, calling out to passersby in hopes of making a sale, and dealing with difficult circumstances simply to make one sale. That level of determination represented a strong desire to exist, to support oneself, and to create opportunities for their family members.
While it may be easy to overlook their contribution to the local economy, the street vendors of Ghana are an integral part of daily life. They allow goods to be brought directly to consumers. They offer smaller-scale versions of products that may not otherwise be available via larger channels of distribution. They continue to maintain small businesses that large systems may not have been able to accomplish.
There is also a human element to every interaction between the vendors and the customers. The smile from a customer after a successful purchase, the willingness of a vendor to negotiate quickly, and the sense of pride and dignity for an honest day's work are all examples of humanity existing in transactions. This reminds us that there is always a person trying to live by selling products to another person.
Appreciation of the hard work done by these vendors makes recognising their importance all the more significant. Street vendors demonstrate the definition of hard work. Respect for the hard work needed to sustain lives on the streets of Ghana is not just a recognition. It is also appreciation for keeping the streets alive.
