The Syrian Civil War has been in the news for many years, and the rhetoric has just now escalated to a really global reach. In this video I take a look at the current state of the city of Aleppo, Syria, which is under the most armed conflict. In doing so, I present the various narratives of the situation brought forward by the United Nations, the Western mainstream media, Russian and Syrian, as well as independent journalists and news outlets. It is clear that the views presented are split into two narratives:
- The UN and Western mainstream media present the Russia-backed Syrian Government as the aggressors while present the opposition forces as revolutionaries.
- The Syrian Government, Russia, as well as independent journalists and media present the Syrian government doing its best to fight off against terrorists that look to overthrow the democratically elected government of Syria.
While I present both narratives objectively, it is clear to me that the second narrative is most aligned with the truth. Also, I go over the claims made by the UN of war crimes by the Syrian government, but it turns out those claims are nothing more than unnamed witnesses and sources. These are serious claims which deserve serious evidence, rather than presented as facts in which the Western established media pushes, almost in a coordinated fashion. This is very similar to the Washington Post article about the CIA stating that Russia "hacked" the United States election, which I covered in my earlier video and I concluded that it was simply propaganda.
A good quote to illustrate these competing narratives is "The first casualty, when war comes, is truth" by United States politician Hiram Johnson, who died eerily on the day the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Current State of Aleppo, Syria
Archive: https://archive.is/JziQj
Archive: https://archive.is/dnhir
Since late November, we have seen Syrian Government forces and their allies capture large swathes of territory from Eastern Aleppo. During the last 48 hours, we have seen an almost complete collapse of armed opposition front lines, leaving them with only 5% their original territory in the city.
This came about after levels of bombardment that many witnesses describe as unprecedented. Civilian deaths and injuries continue at a brutal pace as the United Nations receive credible reports of scores of civilians being killed either by intense bombardment or summary executions by pro-Government forces. We have seen shocking videos of a body burning in the street, ostensibly after aerial bombardment. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has received reports of civilians, including women and children, in four neighbourhoods being rounded up and executed.
As front lines have shifted, civilians have fled across dangerous routes bringing almost no belongings with them. Many families have lost contact with their families inside of Eastern Aleppo, after they were displaced or after they burned their SIM cards and devices for fear of facing repercussions on being detained. There have been allegations of young men being rounded up and detained, or sent to fight for Government forces. Tens of thousands have already been recorded flooding into western Aleppo, but it is likely that many more thousands have been displaced, who are not recorded or registered - but we have no accurate data.
Neither do we have accurate data on the number that remain in the opposition-controlled pocket of Eastern Aleppo, because all of the health and governance entities capable of counting the living, or the dead, have effectively dissolved in the chaos. Moreover, the Syrian authorities have systematically denied us the presence on the ground to directly verify reports. However, this does not mean that the reports that we are receiving are not credible. We are confident that civilians number in the thousands.
Meanwhile, yesterday, the Russian Defence Ministry reported that it has helped over 100,000 civilians to leave eastern Aleppo neighbourhoods, including 40,484 children and that it has supplied 78 tons of humanitarian assistance to IDPs. It also reported 2,215 militants laid down weapons and left eastern Aleppo and that the Russian military is continuing to demine eastern Aleppo neighbourhoods and have completed demining of over 31 hectares of urban structures as well as 18 kilometres of roads.
The Russian Defense Ministry has also stated that there is no “opposition,” “humanitarian organizations” or “human rights defenders” in Aleppo and that eastern Aleppo had been under the full control of terrorists. It has also questioned estimates of “250,000 besieged civilians” as overstated and emphasised that terrorists held over 100,000 civilians as human shields in eastern Aleppo and left as soon as presented with the opportunity to do so. The Russian Federation’s Reconciliation Centre has also reportedly registered allegations of torture and execution as described by residents fleeing eastern Aleppo.
In recent days and hours we appear to be witnessing nothing less an all-out effort by the Syrian government and its allies to end the country’s internal conflict through a total, uncompromising military victory. I do not accept recent statements by the Syrian Government and Russian Ministry of Defense that there were no opposition groups or humanitarian organisations present in eastern Aleppo.
This does not mean that I discount the importance of fighting terrorism or the need to combat the confirmed presence of the listed terrorist group Al Nusra Front in eastern Aleppo. I in fact support and agree with this. But as my Special Envoy has argued, should the presence of less than 1,000 fighters determine the fate of tens and possibly hundreds of thousands of civilians?
In Syria the consequences of such a de-humanising approach could be to further accelerate radicalisation leading to the next iteration of Al Qaeda and ISIL.
Aleppo should represent the end of the quest for military victory, not the start of a broader military campaign in a country already ravaged beyond all recognition by five years of war. The current battle needs to be followed by an immediate end to violence by all sides, unfettered humanitarian access throughout engagement and genuine engagement without preconditions around the political tools we already possess, including Security Council Resolution 2254.

"I am appalled that the deal enabling the evacuation of many thousands of civilians, including the wounded and the sick, from the remaining opposition-held area of eastern Aleppo appears to have collapsed. While the reasons for the breakdown in the ceasefire are disputed, the resumption of extremely heavy bombardment by the Syrian Government forces and their allies on an area packed with civilians is almost certainly a violation of international law and most likely constitutes war crimes."
“The Government of Syria is also obliged under international law to provide medical assistance to all sick and wounded people – civilians and fighters alike. The agreement was there, the buses were in place, the first convoy had set off and was then reportedly blocked by pro-Government militia. This is inexcusable.”

The UN Human Rights Office has received credible reports of scores of civilians being killed – either by intense bombardment or summary execution by pro-Government forces. Dozens of bodies reportedly litter the streets of a number of east Aleppo neighbourhoods, with residents unable to retrieve them due to the intense bombardment and fear of being shot. Government forces and their allies are also reportedly entering civilian homes and killing people. Multiple sources have reported that pro-Government forces killed at least 82 civilians, including 11 women and 13 children, in the Bustan al-Qasr, al-Ferdous, al-Kallaseh, and al-Saleheen neighbourhoods yesterday. Thousands of people who remain in areas under the control of armed groups are at risk of grave violations, including detentions, torture and killings.

The Secretary-General is alarmed over reports of atrocities against a large number of civilians, including women and children, in recent hours in Aleppo. While stressing that the United Nations is not able to independently verify these reports, the Secretary-General is conveying his grave concern to the relevant parties. He has instructed his Special Envoy for Syria to follow up urgently with the parties concerned."
The United Nations underlines the obligation of all parties on the ground to protect civilians and abide by international humanitarian and human rights law. This is particularly the responsibility of the Syrian Government and its allies.

Three thousand civilians, who had been besieged by terrorist organizations, got out from the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo city through humanitarian corridors set by the Syrian Army in cooperation with the Russian side.
SANA reporter in Aleppo said that the civilians’ exit, which started today at dawn, is continuous, adding that the army units and the concerned authorities are transferring them to makeshift centers in Jibrin and providing them with the requirements of residence in the centers.
In the same context, the Russian coordination center in Hmeimim pointed out that 7796 persons , including 3946 children, got out from the eastern neighborhoods during the past 24 hours.
"The statement clarified that since the beginning of the military operations, 110,000 civilians, including 44367 children, have been evacuated from the eastern neighborhoods, while more than 7000 people returned to their houses in the areas restored by the Army.

The Syrian ambassador to the UN denied all allegations of war crimes at Tuesday's emergency meeting of the Security Council, criticising an array of UN representatives for referencing "unverified testimonies"
"I formally and 100 percent reject allegations of revenge and summary executions," said Bashar Jaafari, Syria's ambassador to the UN.
"The actions of the Syrian government are the expression of the constitutional and legal right of the government to protect its citizens from terrorism."
Jaafari criticised UN members for quoting the "unverified testimonies" of civilians in Aleppo, before proceeding to show numerous and unverified photos of soldiers helping civilians as a means of "counter-testimony".
"This is not the fall of Aleppo, this is the liberation of Aleppo," he said.

Russian ‘shelling, execution’ videos in Aleppo faked by militants – MoD
The videos of alleged ‘Russia's shelling and executions’ as well as other similar footage are fake and were shot by the militants themselves, said Major General Igor Konashenkov, the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman.
“All of the statements by high-ranked Western officials, which cite so-called ‘reports by the activists,’ as well as 'flicks,' showing alleged 'Russian bombardments,' ‘executions’ and other stuff are staged videos, produced by special film crews formed by militants," Konashenkov said in a statement Tuesday."
The spokesman said that “it remains a question, why some media outlets were so eager to use them without checking.”
“The inspections carried out by Russian mine clearance specialists in eastern Aleppo didn’t reveal a single school or hospital that had been functioning for its true purposes under the terrorists. All of them were used as command centers, Sharia courts, terrorist rallying points, ammunition depots and underground production centers for manufacturing homemade rockets," the spokesman said.
The Defense Ministry spokesman also expressed regret that Moscow’s calls on Western government and humanitarian groups to send aid to the residents rescued from eastern Aleppo “remained unanswered.”
Konashenkov also said that “no human rights activists, representatives of the ‘opposition’ or nongovernmental humanitarian organizations, like the White Helmets, have been found in eastern Aleppo.”
However, in recent weeks, the Syrian Army has made significant gains in eastern Aleppo and is close to liberating it from the militants.

"Social media coming out of Aleppo has gone into overdrive. Well-articulated video pleas alleging near-death snake their way into the mainstream. There’s just one issue: these aren’t just any civilians, but activists and filmmakers – with spots on primetime TV. "

"‘We were living in security and peace. These areas are being targeted, they want to force us to leave. Every Syrian is being targeted,’ one Syrian religious leader told a delegation of reporters who visited Aleppo earlier this month."
Independent Canadian Journalist Eva Bartlett is an eye-witness in Syria and portrays it in a similar way to Syria and Russia narrative.
I highly recommend watching the entire press conference!
Western Media and UN have the same narrative.
Example of New York Times echoing UN narrative.
Example of New York Times avoiding to write about Aleppo Celebrations.
Aleppo Celebrations are reported mainly by alternative media.

Summary of Part 1:
It is clear there are two contradictory narratives being pushed:
- Western Media Narrative stating that the Syria Government are ruthlessly killing civilians while painting opposition groups as revolutionary fighters.
- Syria, Russia, and Alternative Media painting Syrian Government in the closing phase of liberating civilians from terrorists that want to overthrow the government.
The United Nations claims are based on unnamed, and admittedly unverified sources, yet are reported by the UN and by Western Media as true, and seemly fact based.
Serious claims deserve serious evidence.
This is very similar to the recent Washington Post article about the CIA stating Russia "hacked" the U.S. Elections.

"When President Obama secretly authorized the Central Intelligence Agency to begin arming Syria’s embattled rebels in 2013, the spy agency knew it would have a willing partner to help pay for the covert operation. It was the same partner the has relied on for decades for money and discretion in far-off conflicts: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."
