The last V8 was a budget title released by the British publisher Mastertronic in the mid 1980's and the sort of title you would pick up with a big release as you had money left over without actually reading any reviews. This is exactly how I came to own this... um 'classic' game.
Quite frankly the last V8 was the hardest game that ever existed. Seriously, play it on an emulator if you can and name me a more difficult game?
The basic premise is that on the first level during a nuclear war you have to drive your supercar to your base within a time limit. On the second level, the same again but this time your shields get damaged by going into irradiated areas.
The graphics were decent in a top down old GTA style but the controls were so shoddy you would almost constantly crash within 15 seconds (if you were lucky!) It's hard to determine whether the shocking controls were by design to lengthen the playtime in the game as this could be completed within 3 minutes. A lot of games pulled this trick at the time.
It didn't help that all the action took place in the thin letterbox at the top of the screen, meaning you couldn't really see where you were going in advance. GTA suffered from this in its early incarnations but at least you had 3 times the screen viewable.
The reason this was in any way memorable enough for me to remember from 30 years ago is the sound. Firstly, not many games had in game speech which this did in all its C64 muffled glory but the actual soundtrack to the last V8 by the legendary Rob Hubbard is easily in my top 5 C64.
Gameplay 1/10 Music 10/10 ... what a weird combination.
