We are all born into a families. Our family exists in a community. Our community is part of a larger culture. All of these play key roles in our development. Depending on where we grow up, and who we grow up with, we can learn to perceive the world in radically different ways.
As we grow older we begin to solidify our beliefs. Apples are red, the sky is blue, I know what I know and so should you (see what I did there :p).
Our beliefs dictate how we behave, how we perceive the world, and act as a self correcting compass.
Is Your OS Benefitting You Or Holding You Back?
Raise your hand (figuratively) if you have ever experienced negative self talk. I bet every hand in the digital classroom shot up. The mind produces these thoughts when we are experiencing something that is contradiction to our beliefs. The mind is impartial and works off of the data we have given it (don’t get mad at your mind, it’s not personal). If you were told as a child that dancing is something that you should not do, yet you love to dance, your mind will most likely respond with some colorful, negative self talk as a way to protect you from commiting what it views as a cardinal sin.
It’s not your fault that you have this belief. It’s not your minds fault that it is acting this way. However, if you want to truly enjoy life and have the freedom to be yourself, you are going to need to do something about it.
Upgrading Your Operating System
Imagine that you are a completely new version of yourself where you no longer have any beliefs that hold you back.
You can do anything you want and your mind will be supportive, understanding and even excited about your decisions (your beliefs are perfectly in alignment with your true self).
We will go through a short visualization exercise to help us update our OS.
The more effort you put into this visualization exercise, the greater your reward. Try writing down your thoughts/feelings for an added boost
How do you feel?
How do you act?
What things would you start?
What things would you stop?
Take a moment to really solidify what it feels like to be this new person. Embrace this feeling totally. You have become this new person.
Now transport your new self back into your current life. What is the first thing that you would change about your current life?
Congratulations.
You’ve discovered the first step you need to take in order to become your authentic self. Take a deep breath and take action when you feel ready.
