Season's Greetings Steemit Friends! π
Allow me to begin by wishing you a very βοΈ MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR βοΈ from the BIG APPLE! π½ππ
Is it strange to find visual display design and visual merchandising to be kind of... fascinating? I do. I guess I'm just a nerd like that.
I think it was that '80's cult romcom, 'Mannequin' that sparked my interest in the wondrous world of window dressing. I was seven when the movie debuted.
To imagine an impeccably dressed mannequin (like a young Kim Cattrallπ») would come alive late at night, sneaking around the department store, causing all sorts of trouble was so much fun. Maybe, I was just easily amused!
Yet, in a way, the mannequins do come alive at night. Occasionally (verrry late in the evening), you'll get a lucky peek of the window dressers hard at work at the fancy flagship shops along Fifth and Madison Avenues.
And so, that leads me back to our late night holiday window walking tour! ποΈ
In my last post, we explored Rockefeller Center, gaped at the gargantuan Tree π, watched ice skating at the Rink βΈοΈ, got a glimpse of the windows at Saks Fifth and took a brief breather at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel.
In Part II, we'll browse the windows of Tiffany & Co, Bergdorf Goodman, Gucci, Dolce and Gabanna and Barney's New York.
Fifth Avenue
First, we'll stop to take a look-see at the UNICEF Snowflake βοΈ dangling high above the intersection of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. Once that big, sparkly snowflake arrives, you know it's Christmastime!
Just on the east side of the avenue is...
Tiffany & Co.
Tiffany & Co. recently opened The Blue Box Cafe, just in time for the holiday rush. Before you browse for your next engagement ring, you can now have your 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' too! π©
Ooooo... I'm dying to know what the carat cake is like... Hehe!
Now, let's have a closer look at the windows. It looks like they went with a winter-land theme this year... now, that's my kind of ice fishing! π
Oh yes, dripping in 18K can be back breaking. Lemme lend you a helping hand, little man. I'll take a few of those Tiffany blue boxes for me... I mean, for you...
The vault's open! π Make a mad dash with those diamonds! π
I had to save the best for last... ice sculpting the dazzling pièce de résistance... Jean Schlumberger's "Bird on a Rock". This design was first introduced in 1965. It showcases a simply spectacular 41.66 carat, cushion-cut aquamarine!
UP NEXT IS...
Bergdorf Goodman
ALL THAT JAZZ! πΌπ΅π΅ The windows are off with a loud bang on 5th and 58th!
The 2017 Bergdorf Goodman holiday windows are entitled "To New York With Love".
They "capture the city's appreciation for the visual arts, history, music, film and more by showcasing seven local organizations: American Museum of Natural History, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Museum of the Moving Image, The New York Botanical Garden, New York Philharmonic, New-York Historical Society and UrbanGlass."
The display above is the New York Philharmonic window...
Without a doubt, this window is dedicated to the Museum of the Moving Image. π₯
The most "glamorous" window is up next. It's dedicated to the American Museum of Natural History. I think I might just have the perfect caption for it below...
"Dancing with the Dinosaurs." ππ»
Here, we have the New-York Historical Society window. The sculptures and paintings were created by artist Mark Gagnon. They're inspired by the objects from the collections of the museum and library.
Hmmmm.... I might need your help with this caption. How about we ad-lib? Okay, so, a bull π and a bear π» walk into a colonial tavern and π» (complete the sentence in the comments below!)...
I think the caption for this should read, "In a New York Minute."
"Harajuku Girls Just Want to Have Fun" πΉπ―πΉ at the New York Botanical Society window.
A closet stuffed full with shoes π and a moose head (or maybe a reindeer?), and yet,"I Have Nothing to Wear." πβ
My last but not least caption is simply, " π€".
UP NEXT IS...
Gucci (on Fifth Ave.)
I'll be doling out awards for the next few windows. Gucci wins the β¨ Most Girly Award β¨...
Dolce & Gabbana (on Fifth Ave.)
I love it when luxurious shoes and accessories are served up on a silver platter! Ah, and it appears that my little pinky wanted to say, "Hellooooo!"...
Dolce wins the Most Yummy Award π° ππΉ. Sweet!
LAST STOP...
Barney's New York (on Madison Ave.)
So, it's the norm that Barney's holiday windows are a wee bit "avant-garde". The 2017 windows are the "whimsical" creations designed in collaboration with the artist duo The Haas Brothers. Below is their description of this window...
"In the third Madison Avenue window, entitled βMillennium,β we come close to our present day, but with the Haasβ creations standing in for humans. Their furry creatures interact with digital screens in a forest setting strewn with glittering poppies. The central message of the window is that, even as fear and greed seep into the world, we can choose to embrace love and compassion, fueling hope for a change. The fate of the world lies in our hands, and itβs up to each of us to decide what kind of future weβll create...β
Ummm... okkaayyyy....
This window is the Primordial display and according to The Haas Brothers, "it looks at the beginnings of life on our planet."
Unfortunately, glittering poppies and primordial ooze (although, very groovy!) just doesn't inspire me to do much holiday shopping.
Barney's New York wins both the Most Trippy and Most WTF awards for 2017!
Thanks for commenting, upvoting and resteeming this post! Until next time...
Cheers!
