It's been raining almost every day lately. The humidity is hell on my lenses when I first take the camera outside, but it's worth it! I love the water droplets and the wet, saturated look after a good rain.
Also called Vinca, the Madagascar Periwinkle plant and it's flowers are used to treat diabetes and cancer, and have other medical uses too. Here is WebMD's entry for Madagascar Periwinkle, and here is the wikipiedia article.
A Ray of Sunlight
To get a black background like you see in these images, I need the subject to be significantly brighter than the background. Usually that means adding light with an off-camera flash.
These shots are all natural light, though. How? A tiny beam of sunlight cut through the clouds to light up this little flower. The flower was so bright relative to the background that I was able to get a totally black background without any additional light!
Here is a shot from before the rain.
