This project attempts to show how energy can be tapped and used at a commonly used system- the road speed-breakers. The number of vehicles passing over the speed-breaker in roads increasing day by day. A large amount of energy is wasted at the speed-breakers through the dissipation of heat and also through friction, every time a vehicle passes over it. There is a great opportunity to collect this energy and generating power by making the speed-breaker as a electricity producing unit. The generated power can be used for the lamps, near the highway. In this model we show that how we can generate a voltage from the busy traffic. Conversion of the mechanical energy into electrical energy is widely used concept. It's a mechanism to generate power by converting the potential energy generated by a vehicle going up on a speed-breaker into rotational energy. We have used that simple concept in the project.
The utilization of energy is an indication of the growth of a nation. For example, world average per capita electricity consumption is 2730 kWh compared to Bangladesh's per capita electricity consumption of 327 kWh. Bangladesh has an installed electricity generation capacity of 8,670 MW. The average demand is 12000MW and the shortfall is between 2000MW and 2900MW. One might conclude that to be materially rich and prosperous, a human being needs to consume more and more energy.
Speed-Breaker Electricity Generation
Working Principle:-
Whenever the vehicle is allowed to pass over the dome shape speed-breaker it gets pressed downwards. As the springs are attached to the dome, they get compressed and the rack, which is attached to the bottom of the dome, moves down in reciprocating motion. Since rack has teeth connected to gear there is conversion of reciprocating motion of rack in the rotary motion of gears, but the two gears, rotate in opposite direction. Pinion and larger gear are mounted on same shaft and they rotate with same rpm larger gear is engaged to the small gear which is mounted on the another shaft and which rotates with maximum rpm. So that shafts will rotate with certain rpm these shafts are connected through a belt drive to the generator, which converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. The output of the generator is given to the LED bulb which shows generation of electricity by blinking. For more simplification of working principle and construction the proposed model has been using CATIA softwares shown in figure.
Mathematical Calculation:-
Let consider,
the mass of a vehicle = 400 kg (approximately)
Height of speed-breaker = 8 cm
Work done = Force X distance
But, here
Force = Weight of the body
= 400 kg X 9.81
= 3924 N
Distance travelled by the body = Height of the speed-breaker = 8 cm
Output power = Work done/sec
= (3924 X 0.08)/60
= 5.232 W
Power developed for 1 vehicle passing over the speed-breaker arrangement for one minute is 5.232 W
Power developed for 60 minutes (1hour) = 5.232 X 60 = 313.92 W
Merits:-
Pollution free power generation.
No obstruction to traffic.
Low budget electricity production.
Easy maintenance.
Demerits:-
Selecting suitable generator.
Selection of springs.
Achieving total balance of speed and torque.
It gives low electric output.
Scope and Uses:-
★ The mechanism is very economical and easy to install.
★ Two Protocols of this type of speed-breakers are developed in Bangladesh, not practically implemented till date.
★ Practically implemented in New Jersey, China and Indonesia.
★ Lots of researches and investigations are going on the practically utilize this technique.
★ By doing proper arrangements we may generate high power electricity.
