Today when I was on my way taking my daughter to her volunteering program, I received a phone call that I thought may have been important.
Fortunately I was driving in a quiet residential area so I was able to pull over to the side easily to answer the phone. On the other end it was a woman's voice who had a thick Asian accent asking for me. I confirmed I was the one who she was looking for. Then she proceeds to tell me this-
You are under an investigation by the CRA... and right after she said that without letting her continue that crock of crap I yelled to her SCAM! Then there was dead silence on the other end. And I knew she had hung up anyway.
After reaching the destination and after dropping my daughter off to the building, I sat in my car still in the parking lot Googling that number of that scam. The number was indeed confirmed to be unsafe.
So let's see. We have Microsoft repair scammers who not only call but create pop ups on your PC; employment scammers who offer you jobs to be "payment processors"; credit card company scammers; scammers telling you that you have won trips but that's not really a new one; and then government scams that either have to do with immigration or being penalized for not paying taxes (which is what this was). It's endless!
There are new scams all the time popping up. They want your identity! They want your money! They couldn't care less if they hurt you!
Scammers are becoming more creative. Pay close attention to your intuition. If you receive a call or email that feels just wrong and untrue, then it likely is. Especially if it's so out of the blue. And never give out passwords to anyone or any kind of personal information.
If you were really in trouble with the government for not paying taxes or for some other reason, you would not be notified by a phone call. Fortunately this is not something I have ever been involved with and hope to never be. I would imagine you would be notified by an urgent delivery of some sort. My guess and I hope to never find out.
Just be careful!!
