Nigeria boasts a total domestic edible palm oil production of 1.5 million tons, standing in tall as the fourth largest producer in the world, and accounting for 3% of global production. Despite these impressive numbers, Nigeria still “has a deficit of 0.9 million tons worth more than USD 800 million,” according to NIFOR. This is largely due to the neglect the sector has suffered, with the very downstream, informal sector accounting for most of the activities in this market. I started a series to document this flow of activities, and it is going to take me to rural communities, their worn out and archaic production mills, to overgrown farms, under equipped farmers and the supply chain.
