Polignano a Mare è un borgo della provincia di Bari, nella regione italiana meridionale della Puglia. È anche conosciuta come la "Perla dell'Adriatico" e le sue acque cristalline con le sue falesie punteggiate di grotte scolpite dal mare conferiscono a Polignano a Mare la sua unicità.

Le sue origini sono antiche e collegate alla città greca di Neapolis (IV secolo aC), che poi divenne nota come Polisnea e Polineanum.
Il suo territorio più a nord, tuttavia, fu abitato durante l'ultima glaciazione (10.000 anni fa) e le testimonianze di villaggi risalenti all'età del bronzo (3.500-1.200 AC) sono stati scoperti nel centro storico attuale.

Il centro storico medievale mostra tracce del suo passato arabo, bizantino, spagnolo e normanno, tra cui i resti delle quattro torri di avvistamento che un tempo custodivano l'antica città.

Il panorama è formato da edifici storici quadrati e bianchi che sembrano spuntare direttamente fuori dagli spuntoni calcarei rocciosi, su cui è situata la città.

Le numerose grotte marine di Polignano a Mare erano formate dalle onde del mare che modellavano la roccia. Alcune delle grotte sono abbastanza profonde da raggiungere il centro della città. A testimonianza dall'origine dal Paleolitico, esseri umani sono stati trovati in diverse di queste grotte.

Polignano a Mare è uno dei centri turistici più conosciuti della Puglia sia per le spiagge che per i numerosi monumenti ed edifici di interesse storico e culturale conservati nel suo centro.
Attraversando l'Arco Marchesale (noto anche come la Porta Grande), una volta l'unica entrata della città, ci si ritroverà nel centro storico, dove è possibile visitare la Chiesa Madre del XIII secolo dedicata all'Assunta.

Vale anche la pena visitare la chiesa medievale di Santo Stefano, che è stata sconsacrata, la chiesa del Purgatorio e la Chiesa dei Santi Cosma e Damiano.

Un'altra meta da visitare è l'ex macello della città, che è stato ristrutturato e oggi ospita la Fondazione Museo Pino Pascali e la collezione di opere del famoso artista e scultore pugliese.

Passeggiare per il centro storico costituito da vicoli lastricati in pietra bianca, scorci medievali con vista sul mare Adriatico e deliziosi ristoranti tradizionali, è un'esperienza che rende la visita a Polignano a Mare indimenticabile.

Qui è nato Domenico Modugno, il maestro indimenticabile della musica popolare italiana.

Polignano a Mare is a town in the province of Bari, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. It is also known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic” and crystal clear waters and cliffs pitted with caves carved by the sea give Polignano a Mare its uniqueness.

Its origins are ancient and connected to the Greek City of Neapolis (IV Century BC), which then became known as Polisnea and Polineanum.
Its territory further North however, was inhabited during the last Ice Age (10.000 years ago), and testimony of villages dating back to the Bronze Age (3.500-1.200 BC) have been uncovered in the present day historical centre.

The medieval historical old town reveals traces of its Arab, Byzantine, Spanish and Norman past, including the remains of the four watchtowers that once guarded the ancient town.

The skyline is formed by brilliant white square Mediterranean buildings which seem to grow organically out of the rocky limestone cliffs, on which the town is situated.
The numerous sea caves in Polignano a Mare were formed from the rough sea waves that molded the rock. Some of the caves are deep enough to reach the center of the town. Records from the Paleolithic Age humans have been found in several of these caves.

Polignano a Mare is one of the most popular touristic metas of Puglia for both beaches and the numerous monuments and buildings of historical and cultural interest conserved in its centre.
Head through the Marquis' Arch (also known as the Great Door), once the town's only entrance, and you'll find yourself in the magical centre, home to the 13th-century Mother Church dedicated to the Assumption.

Worth also a visit the Medieval Santo Stefano Church, which has been deconsecrated, the Church of the Purgatory and the Church of Saints Cosma e Damiano.
Another must-see is the town’s former slaughterhouse, which has been renovated and today houses the Pino Pascali Museum Foundation and its collection of works by Puglia's renowned artist and sculptor.

Walking through the historical centre made up of white stone paved alleyways, Medieval glimpses with Adriatic sea views and delightful traditional restaurants, is a experience which makes a visit to Polignano a Mare worthwhile.

Domenico Modugno, an unforgettable master of popular Italian music, was born here.
