Francavilla Fontana è una città in provincia di Brindisi, nella regione italiana meridionale della Puglia. È una delle bellezze nascoste d'Italia e una fiorente realtà produttiva, favorita fin dall'antichità dalla felice posizione geografica tra l'Adriatico e lo Ionio. È anche chiamata la "terra dei principi imperiali".

La città si trova in una zona in cui sono stati rinvenuti insediamenti umani fin dalla preistoria, come dimostrano i resti di un villaggio di capanne rinvenuto in località Cadetto e risalente al medio Neolitico. Francavilla Fontana conserva i segni dell'antica Via Appia, percorsa dai Romani per raggiungere il porto di Brindisi e imbarcarsi per l'Oriente.

Oggi Francavilla è una città ricca di storia, di arte e di cultura da conoscere e scoprire attraverso i numerosi palazzi dalla linee architettoniche del XVII – XVIII secolo, il barocco delle imponenti chiese tra cui campeggia la Basilica Pontificia del SS Rosario con la cupola maiolicata più alta del Salento, il maestoso Castello residenza dei principi Imperiali per oltre due secoli, i seicenteschi artistici portali dei palazzi, le grandi porte cittadine vestigia delle antiche mura che cingevano il nucleo antico, ed i vicoli e le stradine convergenti nelle varie “piazzette” del centro storico che divengono il naturale e suggestivo scenario in cui si svolgono i Riti della Settimana Santa che sono tra i più singolari e suggestivi di Puglia e rappresentano, nella provincia di Brindisi, una vera unicità.

Meritano una visita anche la Chiesa dei Padri Liguorini (chiamata anche la Chiesa d'oro per la ricchezza delle sue decorazioni) commissionata da Filippo d'Angiò per i monaci francescani nel 1322; la chiesa di Santa Chiara costruita in stile neoclassico nel 1836; il Santuario di Maria SS.ma della Croce e la chiesa di San Sebastiano, in stile barocco, con l'attiguo Convento degli Scolopi.

Francavilla Fontana è anche conosciuta per i suoi palazzi con i loro fantastici balconi, come quello medievale del Palazzo Argentina, che è un monumento nazionale oltre al Palazzo Caroli, Palazzo Carissimo, Palazzo Bottari e Palazzo Caniglia, tutti situati nel centro storico della città.
Invece, in piazza Umberto I c'è la notevole Torre dell'Orologio su cui, in un secondo momento, è stata installata la meridiana.

Spostandosi fuori dal centro, la campagna è dominata da distese di ulivi monumentali, dai tipici muretti a secco e da vecchie fattorie che oggi sono bellissime masserie didattiche e agriturismi.

Il Cupete (piccoli capolavori creati con pasta di cioccolato alle nocciole) e la Mandorla Riccia (a base di mandorle, zucchero, acqua, limone, cedro e aromi naturali) sono dolci della tradizione locale da non perdere.

Cosa vedere: il centro storico, il Castello Imperiali, la Basilica Pontificia del Santo Rosario, la Chiesa dei Padri Liguorini, la Chiesa di Santa Chiara, il Santuario di Maria SS.ma della Croce, la Chiesa di San Sebastiano, Palazzo Argentina, Palazzo Caroli, Palazzo Carissimo, Palazzo Bottari, Palazzo Caniglia, la Torre dell'Orologio.

Francavilla Fontana is a town in the province of Brindisi, in the Southern Italian region of Puglia. It is one of the hidden beauties of Italy and a flourishing productive reality, favored since ancient times by the happy geographical position between the Adriatic and the Ionian. It is also called the “Land of the Imperial Princes”.

The town is located in an area where human settlements have been found since prehistoric times, as shown by the ruins of a village of huts found in località Cadetto and dating back to the middle Neolithic period . Francavilla Fontana preserves signs of the ancient Via Appia, travelled by the Romans to reach the port of Brindisi and to embark for the East.

Today Francavilla is a city rich of history, art and culture to discover and discover through the numerous palaces with the architectural lines of the XVII – XVIII century, the baroque of imposing churches including the Pontifical Basilica of the Holy Rosary with the highest majolica dome of Salento; the majestic Castle of the Imperial Principle for over two centuries, the seventeenth-century portals of the palaces, the city’s large vestiges of ancient walls that cradle the ancient nucleus, and the alleyways and narrow streets converging into the various “piazzas” of the historic center that become the natural and evocative scenery where the Rites of Holy Week are among the most singular and suggestive of Apulia and represent, in the province of Brindisi, a true uniqueness.

Also worth a visit the Church of the Liguorine Fathers (also called the Golden Church due to the richness of its decorations) commissioned by Filippo d’Angiò for the Franciscan monks in 1322; the Santa Chiara Church built in neoclassical style in 1836; the St. Mary’s SS Sanctuary of the Cross, and the San Sebastian Church, in Baroque style, with the adjacent Convento degli Scolopi.

Francavilla Fontana is also known for its palaces with their amazing balconies, such as the Argentina Palace's medieval balcony, which is a national monument, Palazzo Caroli, Palazzo Carissimo, Palazzo Bottari and Palazzo Caniglia, all located in the historical town centre.
Instead, in piazza Umberto I there is the remarkable Clock Tower on which, at a later period, the sun dial was installed.

Moving outside the centre, the countryside is dominated by stretches of monumental olive trees, by the typical dry stone walls and by old farmhouses which today are beautiful holiday and teaching farms.

The Cupete (little masterpieces created of chocolate hazelnut paste) and the Mandorla Riccia (made of almonds, sugar, water, lemon, cedar and natural flavors) are must-taste local sweetness.

Thing to see: the Historical center, the Imperiali Castle, the Pontifical Basilica of the Holy Rosary, the Church of the Liguorine Fathers, the Santa Chiara Church, the St. Mary’s SS Sanctuary of the Cross, the San Sebastian Church, the Argentina Palace, the Caroli Palace, the Carissimo Palace, the Bottari Palace, the Caniglia Palace, the Clock Tower.
