In his latest project "Cholonia,"
Japanese designer Yusuke Matsushita made a solid by dipping the sponge into a soluble resin.
The result is a series of unique boxes with a glass-like surface.
To form each Matsushita colored cartridge adds paint to the dissolved resin and then puts a piece of melamine sponge into the liquid.
Then turn the sponge until the farthest part is soaked in the liquid while making sure to leave one side untreated.
Matsushita then gently presses the sponge to release some of the resin before leaving it to rest and eventually harden.
Finally, remove the part of the sponge that has not been touched by the resin, leaving a solid envelope.
Matsushita hopes to show a simple process like this that shows accessibility when it comes to design. It also wants to draw attention to the state of homogenous industry. "We are surrounded by many colorless objects made of mass production," he explains. "This product has the potential to make our lives more colorful through the experience of actual making and the sense of texture, smell and tone to enhance our perception."
