Hello Hive.
Christmas is fast approaching and I can see everyone been creative with red and white materials of various sort everywhere.
Having so many ideas about what I had wanted to make for a Christmas project, I was distracted out of it and still unable to do just anything.
The first week of this month greeted our family with a new baby and kept me so busy I didn't even participate in our monthly zoom live chat that that takes place every first Monday of the month.
Next I was away for about two weeks before the burden became lesser and I had little time to resume my fashion work and blogging too.
After making a first ankara dress of this fabric I was gifted, I decided to try a new design I had titled as market women style because often times we have seen these kind of combinations on people who do not care much about fashion.
Started working yesterday and here is what I have now. This isn't too bad After all and since am in love with blue color, I like how this shaped out.
Challenges working with velvet fabric.
I had a little trouble handling velvet fabric.
They are mostly stretchy and often exceed the measurements one take and sometimes you dont get lucky with buying the fabric because fake ones are also be sold at the market.
Here are just a few tricks I found helpful while stitching the dress.
Reduce your pattern measurements.
You don't need to add seam allowances while cutting the fabric. The extra stretchiness will make up for that unless you want go keep slim fitting it all the time.Add interface to folding edges you are working with.
This was where I had a lot of troubles especially with the hemming part where the fabric folded inside and refuse to open up, that folding will shorting your length measurement when you work with it that way, so to get that portion opened up, an idea came for me to add some interface.
The interface opened up all the folded part and they behaved themselves well while I stitch.
- Calculative stitching is important with no mistake..
Losing stitches with velvet fabric is annoying, and you have to be precise about what you are stitching.
Make sure they are probably placed because at the slightest mistake and you want to lose a seam the fragile fabric will break open like the one I have here.
Thank goodness it was in a hidden location..
That been said, the best way I had thought to mix these two fabrics is what I have simply done above.
The neckline ankara fabric seems oddly cut, I don't know how to do those stuff and even after drafting a fabric I felt will be great I still end up getting something am not sure of
Another thing I wanted to do was add a cut out of the fabric well arranged on the fabric like this but after stitching it up, I fell in love with the plain front and deciding against adding any other thing except maybe some stone embellishing.
Some working process
I haven't done any Christmas project yet but I do hope I can do something before the season is over.
Thanks for reading through and please enjoy some happy shot from a grateful heart.
