This shy, skulking, bird's mottled plumage provides great camouflage. It is the Bassian Thrush ( Zoothera lunulata). It sometimes goes by the name of Olive-tailed thrush. There are probably many better shots online but I was happy with this one. In my area this birds is usually found in dense temperate rainforest amidst the dark shadows of giant tree ferns. If you disturb one, they will run of fly a short distance and then stand still, merging into the background. This makes it a difficult bird to photograph. They forage for food by scratching around in the leaf litter. This one wandered just a little too close to a clearing, giving me just enough light to take a reasonable shot. has posted images of a closely related bird, the Scaly Ground Thrush ( Zoothera dauma).
