It's hot in Havana./ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Greetings, friends of #blackandwhite, how’s it going? Lately, the heat around here has been unbearable, and all the body seems to crave is the beach. That’s what a young guy told me while I was trying to photograph him jumping into the water from the Malecón wall. “Hey, but what you’re doing is really dangerous!” I told him. “Well, I just have to aim well for the water and avoid the rocks,” he answered.

Saludos, amigos de #blackandwhite, ¿cómo les va? Por esta geografía últimamente está haciendo un calor terrible, y al cuerpo lo único que se le antoja es playa; así me decía un chico mientras intentaba fotografiarlo cuando se lanzaba al agua desde el muro del Malecón. Oye, ¡pero es muy peligroso lo que haces! Bueno, lo único que tengo que apuntar bien al agua y esquivar las rocas, me dice.

A few years ago, on days like this, people used to go to the beaches outside the city, where there are some really beautiful spots. But with the transportation crisis, many now choose to swim here despite the obvious danger.

Hace algunos años, en días así, las personas iban al litoral costero a la salida de la ciudad, donde hay unas playas muy bonitas, pero con la crisis del transporte optan por bañarse en este lugar aun con el peligro eminente.

And people of all ages do it. I’ve even seen kids around ten years old jumping into the sea from quite a height.

Y de todas las edades, hasta chicos de 10 años los he visto lanzarse al mar desde una considerable altura.

They barely pay attention to the police anymore. The officers show up, and the boys simply ignore them completely.

Ya ni caso le hacen a la policía; ellos vienen y les ignoran por completo.

What really surprised me these past days was the number of people there. Usually there are no more than twenty or thirty, but this time there must have been over a hundred.

Estos días atrás me sorprendió la cantidad de personas que había allí; normalmente no pasan de los 20 o 30, pero en esta ocasión prácticamente eran más de 100.

So the day went by somewhere between the fear of witnessing an accident and the excitement of trying to capture the perfect photo. In the end, I got the images I wanted, though I couldn’t stop thinking that I wish there were safer options for people to cool off during the summer heat in this beautiful city.

Así, entre el miedo de ver un accidente y la expectativa de hacer la foto, transcurrió ese día; al final logré lo que quería, aunque con el sentimiento de que ojalá haya otras opciones para refrescarse del calor del verano en esta bella ciudad.
