In the opening L.A. party scene of writer-director Nicole Holofcener’s fifth and most accessible brainy comedy romance, Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss), a divorcee and masseuse trying to get back into the dating scene, meets divorced Albert (lovably needy James Gandolfini), who she starts sleeping with, as well as thoughtful poet Marianne (Catherine Keener), who becomes a client and friend. They all have daughters heading for college. Things get deliciously tangled when it is eventually revealed that Marianne is Albert’s angry ex-wife. —AT
