Long ago, while the Buddha was teaching, a dark energy sought to silence his words of peace, raining heavy stones down upon him.
Without a second thought for his safety, Dzambhala stepped forward. He used his own body as a shield, taking the blows meant for his teacher.
He was struck, and he felt the pain-just as we feel the "stones" of life-the worries about our families, the fear of not having enough, and the struggle to survive.
Seeing his distress, the Buddha approached Dzambhala. He didn't just use medicine; he emitted a soothing, nectar-like energy from his hand and poured it over Dzambhala's head.
The cooling sensation of the sacred nectar immediately cleared the heat of the injury, healed the wound, and relieved Dzambhala's suffering.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Dzambhala bowed to the Buddha and made a vow. He promised that if anyone ever found themselves in poverty or suffering, and they poured water over his head, He would help them.
