Hello, anime fans. Today I’m bringing you a series that’s very different from anything I’ve shared with you so far. Well, it’s not the first time I’ve featured a Slice of Life anime per se, but I do think it’s the first time I’ve featured an anime with this kind of story. I say this mainly because I don’t recall seeing any other anime like it in the past. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Kuzushiro, “A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace” is an animated adaptation produced by the studio Voil. Hola, fanáticos del anime. Hoy les traigo una serie muy diferente a todo lo que les he traído hasta ahora. Bueno, no es la primera vez que les traigo un Slice of Life como tal, pero sí creo que es la primera vez que traigo un anime con este tipo de historia. Digo esto más que nada porque no recuerdo haber visto algún otro anime parecido en el pasado. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Kuzushiro, "A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace" es una adaptación animada producida por el estudio Voil. Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to Nana Futami, a shy and often nervous young manga artist who has just started serializing her first original work, titled Dear Subaru. With the help of her editor, Kaede Satō, and her one and only reliable assistant, Mizuki Hazama, she will try to fulfill her dreams of becoming a renowned Shōjo manga artist. However, her anxiety will cause her to have some delusions, in addition to the long hours, constant deadlines, and many other problems she will face in this massive and grueling manga industry.

El anime inicia presentándonos a Nana Futami, una joven mangaka tímida y frecuentemente nerviosa que acaba de serializar su primera obra original llamada Dear Subaru. Con la ayuda de su editora Kaede Satō y su única y confiable asistente Mizuki Hazama intentará cumplir con sus sueños de ser una reconocida mangaka Shōjo. I think I took what I said the other day about expanding the variety of anime I watch each season a little too seriously. At the end of last year, I came across this anime and just decided to give it a try because it looked like fun. The humor, while not the best in my opinion, still grew on me, and it was easy to get into the first episode. Over time, I grew quite fond of it, even though the plot focuses solely on the daily life of a mangaka. Yes, this is one of those laid-back Slice of Life anime that’s also funny and caters to a very specific niche.
Back then, I think I was still excited about what I’d experienced with Zenshū, so I decided to watch this anime to explore the world of manga further. But unlike the Isekai I just mentioned, A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace is a very different anime from what anyone would expect to see. I’ll warn you up front that it’s not for everyone, especially since it’s a Josei anime (meaning it’s aimed at a female and adult audience). And well, you can tell me what I was doing watching an anime for women at the end of last year.
Creo que me tomé muy en serio lo que comenté la otra vez sobre ampliar más la variedad de animes que veo en emisión cada temporada. A finales del año pasado me encontré este anime y simplemente me quedé a verlo porque lo consideré algo divertido. El humor que tiene, si bien no es el mejor a mí parecer, me gustó igualmente y fue sencillo llegar a ver su primer episodio. Con el tiempo, le tomé algo de cariño, a pesar de que su trama trate únicamente de la vida diaria de una mangaka. Si, este es de esos animes Slice of Life tranquilos, pero a la vez cómicos y que tratan de un nicho muy específico.
En ese entonces creo que aún estaba emocionado de lo que llegué a experimentar con Zenshū, así que decidí ver este anime para explorar más sobre el mundo del manga. Pero a diferencia del Isekai que les acabo de mencionar, A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace es un anime muy distinto a lo que cualquiera esperaría ver. De antemano les aviso que no es para todo el mundo, especialmente porque es un anime Josei (o sea, que está dirigido para un público femenino y adulto). That said, I’ll say it again: it was a lot of fun watching this anime back then, and I had a great time, especially because I really got into the story it tells. As you’ve probably read above, the story is about Nana Futami, a young manga artist who managed to get her first full-length manga, Dear Subaru, serialized thanks to the help of her editor, Kaede Satō. However, because of this, she’ll have to adapt to a grueling schedule filled with deadlines, constant delays, signing sessions, and other mangaka duties she has to fulfill.
To make matters worse, her shyness and nervousness will cause her to run into the occasional extra problem with her editor; plus, her assistant, Mizuki Hazama, will have to deal with our protagonist’s delusions while helping her with her work. The most interesting thing about everything we see in this anime is what we learn about the world of manga. Or rather, at least what Nana’s perspective shows us in this story. The horrendously long hours, the problems with deadlines, the differences between editors and mangaka, and the idealization they have of their work.
Igualmente, vuelvo a decirles que fue muy divertido ver este anime en su momento y lo pasé genial, sobre todo porque llegué a disfrutar de la historia que nos cuenta. Como ya leyeron arriba -supongo yo-, la historia trata de Nana Futami, una joven mangaka que consiguió serializar su primer manga largo llamado Dear Subaru, gracias a la ayuda de su editora, Kaede Satō. Sin embargo, debido a esto, tendrá que adaptarse a un horario súper fuerte con trabajos por entregar, retrasos constantes, sesiones de firmas y demás cosas de mangakas que cumplir.
Para colmo, su problema de timidez y nerviosismo harán que tenga uno que otro problema de más con su editora; además de que su asistente, Mizuki Hazama, tendrá que lidiar con los delirios de nuestra protagonista mientras la ayuda con su trabajo. Lo interesante de todo lo que llegamos a ver en este anime es lo que aprendemos acerca del mundo del manga. O bueno, al menos lo que nos muestra el punto de vista de Nana en esta historia. Los horarios horriblemente largos, los problemas con las entregas, las diferencias que hay entre los editores y mangakas y la idealización que tienen con su trabajo.

It’s true that most of what we see in this anime is pure comedy, especially when it comes to our protagonist, whose personality and way of thinking are downright hilarious. Whenever something happens, the way she reacts, speaks, and even interacts with people keeps you entertained. But amid all those pranks, double entendres, and absurd moments, there are some serious themes worth considering. Nana Futami’s story alone teaches us how to deal with certain emotional and personal issues, such as low self-esteem.
Cases of bullying, labor exploitation, the tension between creativity and popularity, the inability to fulfill your dreams, and many other issues are addressed here. It may not have the best character development in the world, but at least we get to know more than enough about each of the main characters in this anime to become somewhat familiar with them. You’ll probably think I’m exaggerating all this based on what you saw in the trailer. But while it may seem like a quiet story—which it is—it’s also entertaining and even a little emotional.
Si es cierto que la mayoría de cosas que vemos en este anime son pura comedia, sobre todo cuando se trata de nuestra protagonista quien tiene una personalidad y forma de pensar que da hasta risa. Siempre que sucede algo, su forma de reaccionar, hablar y tratar incluso con la gente hace que te entretengas viéndola. Pero entre todas esas bromas pesadas, chistes de doble sentido y momentos absurdos, hay temas un poco densos que son dignos de tomarse en cuenta. Ya de por sí el caso de Nana Futami nos enseña cómo afrontar ciertos problemas emocionales y personales como lo puede ser la falta de autoestima.
Casos de bullying, explotación laboral, competencia entre creatividad y popularidad, imposibilidad de cumplir con tus sueños y muchas otras cosas más son las que se tratan acá. No tendrá el mejor desarrollo de personajes del mundo, pero al menos llegamos a conocer más que suficiente de cada uno de los personajes principales de este anime de manera que lleguemos a familiarizarnos de alguna forma con ellos. Seguramente llegarás a pensar que estoy exagerando con todo esto debido a lo que llegaste a ver en el trailer. Pero si bien pareciera tener una historia tranquila -lo cual es así-, también cuenta con ser entretenida y un poco emotiva, inclusive.

It’s not just the story of Nana Futami trying to adjust to her new life as an up-and-coming manga artist; it’s also the story of a young woman struggling with self-esteem issues who is slowly making her dreams come true. Another thing I really liked and found very entertaining about this anime is the relationship that develops between Nana and her editor, Kaede. At first, she’s portrayed as a mature, professional, and even perfect woman (at least that’s how our protagonist sees her), but little by little we get to see what Kaede is really like with Nana, as well as what she thinks and feels about her. I don’t know if it’s a yuri anime, but based on what I’ve seen in all the episodes so far, I highly doubt it.
But anyway, I’m not saying that this bothers me if it is the case. I think that, for a simple slice-of-life series with satirical and somewhat mature humor, I expected some Fanservice, which it doesn’t have either. This is good, and also obvious when you remember that it’s a Josei series—meaning its target audience is women, so it wouldn’t make sense. And well, let’s just say there are a few references to real-life events in the manga world that some of you reading this might recognize. I honestly didn’t catch any of them because I don’t read manga. Yeah, I don’t know why I watched this anime about mangaka when I’m not even a manga fan.
No es solo la historia de Nana Futami intentando adaptarse a su nueva vida como mangaka en ascenso, sino que también es la historia de una joven con problemas de autoestima que está cumpliendo poco a poco con sus sueños. Otra cosa que me gusta y me entretuvo mucho de este anime es la relación que vemos desarrollarse entre Nana y su editora Kaede. Al principio nos la pintan como una mujer madura, profesional y hasta perfecta (al menos así la ve nuestra protagonista), pero poco a poco llegamos a ver cómo es Kaede con Nana, además de lo que opina y siente por ella. No sé si sea un anime Yuri, pero hasta lo que llegué a ver en todos sus episodios lo dudo mucho.
Pero bueno, tampoco estoy diciendo que esto me moleste si es el caso. Considero que, para ser un simple Slice of Life con humor satírico y un tanto maduro, esperaba algo de Fanservice, cosa que tampoco tiene. Esto es bueno, además de obvio al recordar que es un Josei, o sea, su público objetivo son mujeres así que no tiene sentido. Y bueno, digamos que hay una que otra referencia a casos reales del mundo del manga que puede que alguno de los que me lean reconozcan. Yo sinceramente es que no capté ninguna porque no leo manga. Si, no sé por qué he visto este anime de mangakas si ni siquiera soy fan del manga.

To wrap things up, I’d like to talk about the audiovisual aspects of A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace. While the studio behind it seems relatively new, I have to admit they didn’t do a bad job with this series. Quite the opposite, in fact—the art style and character designs are particularly appealing. It isn’t exactly smooth, but that’s not necessary since it achieves its goal of entertaining us with a perfect blend of drawing styles and very well-executed visual effects. Especially when it comes to showing expressions, emotions, reactions… well, all that stuff.
I really like the vibrant and varied color palette, as well as the use of light and shadow. The shots are almost always the same, so don’t expect breathtaking views or anything like that. Remember, we’re talking about the story of an antisocial mangaka, so obviously we’ll almost always see the same shots of the room or studio where our protagonist works (and lives). Still, the attention to detail in the setting, the designs, and the way each character’s work is presented is excellent. The sound effects also do their job well, as does the soundtrack. Anyway, here’s a unique anime that might interest you.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the Slice of Life and comedy genres.
Para finalizar, les hablaré del apartado audiovisual de A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace. Si bien parece que el estudio a cargo es relativamente nuevo, admito que no hizo un muy mal trabajo con esta obra. Más bien, todo lo contrario, sobre todo con el estilo artístico y el diseño de los personajes que vemos agrada mucho. No tiene una gran fluidez que se diga, pero tampoco es necesario ya que consigue su objetivo de entretenernos con una mezcla perfecta de estilos de dibujo y efectos visuales muy bien logrados. Sobre todo al momento de mostrar expresiones, emociones, reacciones… bueno, todo eso pues.
La paleta de colores vivos y variados me gusta mucho, al igual que el uso que le dan a las luces y sombras. Los planos casi siempre son los mismos, así que tampoco esperemos vistas impresionantes ni nada por el estilo. Recordemos que estamos hablando de la historia de una mangaka asocial, así que obviamente veremos casi siempre los mismos planos de la habitación o el estudio donde trabaja (y vive) nuestra protagonista. Igual, los detalles al entorno, los diseños y la manera de mostrarnos el trabajo de cada personaje es excelente. Los efectos de sonido también cumplen con lo suyo, al igual que la banda sonora. En fin, aquí les dejo un anime diferente que puede interesarte.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género del Slice of Life y la comedia.
