Hello, anime fans. Tonight I’m bringing you another romance anime that I watched during the last fall season. An anime that went somewhat unnoticed, whether because of its generic nature or the competition it faced. Not unlike many other RomCom animes you’ve surely seen, A Star Brighter Than the Sun is based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Kazune Kawahara and was produced by Studio Kai. Un anime que pasó un tanto desapercibido, ya sea por lo genérico o por la competencia que hubo. Plot
The anime begins with a high school girl who is taller than all her classmates. She introduces herself as Sae Iwata and tells us that, ever since she was a little girl, she has always been in love with her dear classmate, Koki Kamishiro, who was shorter than her back then. However, as expected, when they reach adolescence, they both grow, especially Koki, who becomes taller, stronger, and more attractive. This made him very popular with the girls in high school. Because of this, our shy but tall protagonist, Sae, distances herself from him.

El anime inicia con una chica de secundaria que es más alta que todas sus compañeras de clase. I know I sound like a broken record, but I’d like to remind my regular readers just how much of a romance fan I am. This is perfectly illustrated by the anime I’m sharing with you today, which is easily the most generic thing I saw toward the end of last year—and I’m not exaggerating. It’s not that it’s bad or that the story doesn’t make sense or anything like that; rather, it’s the typical teenage love story between two high school students in Japan. I mean, it’s exactly what anyone would see in any other run-of-the-mill RomCom anime these days. The only difference is that it lacks anything that would make it stand out as such.
One of the things it lacks is an original plot. Instead, what we see is the typical story of the childhood friend who’s always been in love with the kind boy she grew up with, watching him in class, and who eventually becomes attractive and popular. After growing apart because of this, it just so happens that they reunite in high school since they’re back studying together in the same classroom. During this high school period, we see our protagonist completely smitten, admiring her beloved Koki while misinterpreting everything he says or does with other classmates.

Esto se puede confirmar perfectamente con el anime que les traigo hoy, el cual es de lo más genérico que he visto a finales del año pasado, sin exagerar. No es que no esté mal o que su historia no tenga sentido ni nada por el estilo, en cambio es la típica historia de amor adolescente entre dos estudiantes de preparatoria de Japón. O sea, es tal cual lo que cualquiera llegaría a ver en cualquier otro anime RomCom común en la actualidad. La única diferencia es que no posee nada que lo haga popular como tal.
Una de esas cosas que no tiene es una trama original. En cambio, lo que vemos es la típica historia de la amiga de la infancia que siempre ha estado enamorada del chico amable con el que creció viéndolo en clases y que se vuelve atractivo y popular al final. Luego de distanciarse por esto último, da la “casualidad” de que se reencuentran en preparatoria ya que vuelven a estudiar juntos en el mismo aula de clases. Durante esta época de preparatoria vemos a nuestra protagonista toda embobada admirar a su querido Koki mientras malinterpreta todo lo que dice o hace con otras compañeras de clase.

To start with, the plot is typical of a generic RomCom, except that the protagonist of this story isn’t a man, but a woman. That alone should offer us a very different perspective from what we usually see in other generic romance anime. For one thing, the humor is different, as is the Fanservice, which is absent from this anime. Also, regarding the main plot, we see that the pace of events and the usual clichés have a different order and meaning.
We see that what our protagonist feels for Koki is pure love—too pure, actually. On the other hand, Sae also has her own traits worth mentioning, such as her low self-esteem and her shyness when interacting with or dealing with people. Despite her physical appearance, height, and great strength, she is actually a rather sensitive girl who gets her hopes up easily. By the way, Koki also has both the virtues mentioned earlier and his flaws that we can see throughout the series. In short, rather than admiration—as many might assume—what she feels is different.
Para empezar, la trama es la típica de un RomCom genérico, solo que con la diferencia de que el protagonista de esta historia no es un hombre, sino una mujer. Ya eso, de partida, nos debería ofrecer un punto de vista muy distinto del que normalmente vemos en otros animes de romance genéricos. Para empezar, el tema del humor es distinto, al igual que el tema del Fanservice que no existe en este anime. También en cuanto a la trama principal vemos que el ritmo de los acontecimientos y los clichés de siempre poseen un orden y un significado diferentes.
Vemos que lo que siente nuestra protagonista por Koki es un amor puro, demasiado puro, la verdad. Por otro lado, Sae tiene también sus detalles a mencionar como su baja autoestima y su timidez al momento de relacionarse o tratar a la gente. A pesar de su aspecto físico, estatura y gran fuerza; en realidad es una chica bastante sensible y fácil de ilusionar. Por cierto, Koki también tiene tanto sus virtudes ya mencionadas antes como también sus defectos que podemos notar a lo largo de la serie. En resumen, más que admiración -como podrían deducir muchos-, lo que ella siente es diferente.

One aspect of this anime worth highlighting is the way we see the characters going about their daily lives as high school students. Details like how Sae’s classmates view and treat her are particularly important because they show us how some young people experience this pivotal time in their lives. There are also the typical events and scenarios found in any school romance anime. I mention all this because, as you can see, we have twelve episodes where we’ll watch both Sae and Koki try to interact and treat each other as current classmates.
Now, let’s move on to what I DIDN’T like about this anime—or rather, what actually stressed me out a bit at the time. For starters, there’s Sae’s passive and negative attitude; we constantly see her trying to “not think” about Koki all the time so she can live a peaceful school life, but she ends up thinking about every second she’s seen him each day and always mentions everything she admires and finds fascinating about him and so on. Anyway, she’s hopelessly in love with Koki—that much is crystal clear. What bothers me is how clumsy and completely clueless Sae is every time she’s with Koki.
Un detalle a destacar de forma positiva de este anime es la manera en la que vemos a los personajes vivir sus días como estudiantes de preparatoria. Cosas como la forma en la que los compañeros de clase ven y tratan a Sae es de suma importancia debido a que nos demuestra cómo experimentan algunos jóvenes esta época clave de sus vidas. También están los típicos eventos o escenarios de todo anime de romance escolares. Menciono todo esto ya que, como pueden leer, tenemos doce episodios donde veremos tanto a Sae como a Koki intentar relacionarse y tratarse como actuales compañeros de clase.
Ahora, aquí pasamos a lo que NO me gustó de este anime o más bien me llegó a estresar un poco en su momento. Para empezar, está la actitud pasiva y negativa de Sae quien constantemente la vemos intentar “no pensar” en Koki todo el tiempo y así vivir una vida escolar tranquila, pero termina pensando en cada segundo que lo ha visto cada día y siempre menciona todo lo que admira y le fascina de él y tal. En fin, que está perdidamente enamorada de Koki, ya eso está bien claro. Lo que me molesta es lo torpe y completamente despistada que es Sae cada vez que está con Koki.

I say this because, every time they’re together, we can clearly see and hear how he’s constantly trying to rekindle the friendship they had as kids. And not only that, but we also see him trying to show off or prove just how much he’s changed and grown (something she noticed before anyone else, but whatever). On top of that, our great Koki throws his hints—which are so, so obvious—at Sae over and over again that it’s absurd to see how she sometimes ignores him and even misinterprets him.
This misinterpretation, on one hand, is understandable since he also messed it up when he told her he’s in love with someone else when it’s CLEARLY our protagonist he’s in love with. I mean, it’s absurd—pretty absurd—the level of innocence, clumsiness, and everything else you could say about this pair of characters, really. But hey, maybe a lot of girls like this kind of teenage romance story where every misunderstanding turns into a huge drama, they get depressed, cry, and blah, blah, blah. I can honestly tolerate this, but only to a certain extent.
Esto lo digo porque, en cada momento en el que están juntos, podemos ver y escuchar perfectamente cómo él constantemente intenta recuperar la antigua relación de amistad que tenían cuando niños. Y no solo eso, sino que también lo vemos intentar lucirse o demostrar lo mucho que ha cambiado y que ha crecido (cosa que ella lo ha notado antes que todo el mundo, pero bueno). Sumado a esto, nuestro gran Koki lanza una y otra vez sus indirectas tan, pero tan directas a Sae que es absurdo ver cómo ella a veces lo ignora y hasta lo malinterpreta incluso.
Esta malinterpretación, por un lado, es comprensible ya que él también la arruinó al momento de decirle que está enamorado de alguien cuando CLARAMENTE de quien está enamorado es de nuestra protagonista. Es que es absurdo, bastante absurdo el nivel de inocencia, torpeza y todo lo que se pueda decir de este par de personajes, de verdad. Pero bueno, tal vez a muchas chicas les guste este tipo de historias románticas de adolescentes donde por cada malentendido hacen todo un drama, se deprimen, lloran y bla, bla, bla. Yo sinceramente puedo llegar a soportar esto, pero hasta cierto punto.

But then again, maybe those details are also part of the series’ own brand of humor, which is much more innocent and lighthearted than usual. I’m not complaining about this, to be honest, but I also don’t expect much from a generic RomCom aimed at a female audience (Shoujo). I won’t deny that I was expecting something a bit more edgy in terms of humor—anything that would liven up its innocent and melodramatic plot a little more—but oh well. I’ll say it again: I have nothing against the story, the characters (except for the protagonist), or the clichés themselves.
I just have my own opinions, tastes, and levels of patience for certain things, pacing, levels of innocence, and other details in a work and its characters. For example, the supporting characters in this particular anime don’t stand out at all; they just fulfill their respective roles as characters predefined by categories or titles already familiar in this franchise and even more so in the RomCom genre. What I think stood out the most was the relationship Sue forms with another classmate named Yota Ayukawa. There’s also a sort of misunderstanding with him, a supposed love triangle—you know, the usual stuff.
Pero bueno, tal vez y esos detalles también sean parte del humor que posee la misma serie, la cual es mucho más inocente y ligera de lo normal. No me quejo de esto, la verdad, pero tampoco es que espere tanto de un RomCom genérico hecho para un público femenino (Shoujo). No voy a negar que esperaba algo más fuerte en cuanto a humor se refiere, cualquier cosa que sirviera para animar un poco más su inocente y melodramática trama, pero bueno. Repito, no tengo nada en contra de la historia, los personajes (exceptuando la protagonista) y los clichés como tal.
Solo tengo mis opiniones, gustos y niveles de paciencia para ciertas cosas, ritmos y niveles de inocencia y otros detalles en una obra y sus personajes. Por ejemplo, los personajes secundarios de este anime en particular no destacan para nada, solo cumplen con sus respectivos roles que son personajes predefinidos por categorías o títulos ya conocidos en esta franquicia y más en el género del RomCom. Lo que creo que llegó a destacar más fue la relación que forman Sue con otro compañero de clase llamado Yota Ayukawa. Con este hay una especie de malentendido también, supuesto triángulo amoroso, ya saben, lo típico.

One other thing I didn’t quite like about this anime was its audiovisual presentation, to wrap things up. More specifically, its animation and fluidity, which are quite lacking, although it does at least maintain good character design, along with a few other details. But when it comes to fast-paced, fluid scenes, what this anime delivers falls far short. Well, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit because I have somewhat high expectations for what I hope to see visually, given all the anime I’ve watched in recent years, but anyway.
What I do want to complain about is the constant use of typical, basic lighting and glow effects that you usually see in any production. I get that they use this a lot as a visual device to fit the story—what the protagonist feels all the time about Koki and all that. If we add basic motion effects to that, then you’ll understand what I mean by somewhat disappointing animation, especially since it was made by Studio Kai (the same studio that animated Sentenced to Be a Hero). Anyway, I’ll leave this RomCom anime here for anyone who wants to watch it.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the romance and comedy genre is concerned.
Otra cosa que tampoco me terminó de gustar del todo de este anime fue su aspecto audiovisual, para finalizar. Más que nada su animación y fluidez, la cual escasea bastante, aunque mantienen al menos un buen diseño de personajes, entre uno que otro detalles. Pero al momento de ver escenas movidas y con más fluidez, lo que nos muestra este anime se queda muy corto. Bueno, tal vez y esté exagerando un poco debido a que tengo unas expectativas un tanto altas de lo que espero ver audiovisualmente debido a todo lo que he visto de animes en estos últimos años, pero bueno.
De lo que sí me quiero quejar es del constante uso de efectos de luces y brillos típicos y básicos que normalmente uno ve en cualquier edición. Entiendo que utilicen mucho esto como un recurso visual que vaya con la historia, lo que llega a sentir la protagonista todo el tiempo por Koki y todo eso. Si con eso le sumamos los efectos de movimiento básicos, entonces ya entenderán a qué me refiero con una animación un tanto decepcionante, sobre todo cuando veo que lo hizo Studio Kai (el mismo que animó Sentenced to Be a Hero). En fin, les dejo este anime RomCom para el que quiera lo vea.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance y comedia.
