Uno de los que más me llegaron a gustar es el anime que les traigo hoy, el cual posee una mezcla única de drama con elementos sobrenaturales y temas bastante densos como la depresión y la muerte. Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to Hinako Yaotose, a teenager who has suffered from depression ever since she lost her parents and older brother in a car accident when she was just a little girl. Although she constantly wishes for death, she cannot bring herself to take her own life. While attending high school, Hinako feels constantly drawn to the vast ocean that surrounds her. One day, she encounters a beautiful girl with long, flowing hair and blue eyes who warns her not to get too close to the beach. Despite the warning, Hinako gets carried away and stands gazing at the ocean when something grabs her and drags her down into the depths of the water.

El anime inicia presentándonos a Hinako Yaotose, una adolescente que sufre de depresión desde que perdió a sus padres y su hermano mayor en un incidente de automóvil cuando apenas era una niña. This is one of the most unexpected anime I’ve seen in the past year. Well, it’s true that I’d been looking forward to it ever since I saw the trailer, but in the end, it surprised me more than I expected, to be honest. For a moment, I thought it was a supernatural horror anime because of the monsters that appear, but then I realized it’s something much deeper and more dramatic than I’d imagined. Starting with the whole situation the protagonist, Hinako Yaotose—who the entire story revolves around—is going through. I’m not going to say I didn’t like it, since I was pretty entertained from start to finish.
Although, there were definitely moments where all the drama that builds up from the beginning got a little frustrating. But I think that’s more because of the protagonist herself than the plot or the story. I’ll talk more about that later, but the main thing I want to tell you is not to expect a supernatural horror anime with beautiful waifus or anything like that. This anime also doesn’t have the typical humor or Fanservice that many other supernatural anime usually feature. As you read above, it’s a dramatic series dealing with some pretty heavy themes.

O bueno, sí es verdad que esperaba verlo desde que vi su trailer, pero al final me sorprendió más de lo que esperaba, la verdad. Por un momento pensé que se trataba de un anime de terror sobrenatural debido a los monstruos que aparecen, pero luego me dí cuenta de que es algo mucho más denso y dramático de lo que me imaginaba. Ya les hablaré de eso después, pero lo principal que les quiero decir es que no esperen ver un anime de terror sobrenatural con waifus hermosas ni nada por el estilo. Este anime tampoco posee el típico humor o Fanservice que mayormente poseen muchos otros animes de género sobrenatural. Como ya leyeron arriba, es una serie dramática con temas bastante densos a tratar.

Another thing worth noting is Hinako’s very unique personality; aside from thinking about her parents and younger brother, she also tends to disconnect from everything, as if she were stuck in a “mental/emotional loop.”
It’s difficult to explain Hinako’s personality in detail, as she has certain tendencies and thoughts that only someone who has gone through the same thing as her can truly understand. This has sparked a lot of discussions and opinions online about this anime and its protagonist. Throughout the anime, we see how Hinako constantly justifies everything she thinks and feels. And despite all the help and companionship she receives, she still harbors that desire to end her life. Or rather, not her—but whoever is capable of taking her life, she would happily let them do it.
Uno de esos temas es la depresión y el deseo de no querer vivir más (deseo suicida). Esto lo vemos desarrollarse en nuestra protagonista, Hinako Yaotose, quien ha perdido a sus padres y su hermano mayor cuando apenas era una niña. Debido a su fuerte deseo de morir, nunca ha podido acabar con su vida, la cual es algo que me llamó la atención desde un principio. Otra cosa a destacar es la personalidad tan particular que posee Hinako, quien aparte de pensar en sus padres y su hermano menor, también llega a desconectarse de todo, como si estuviera metida en un “bucle mental/emocional”.
Es complicado explicar a detalle la personalidad de Hinako ya que posee ciertas tendencias y pensamientos que solo otra persona que haya pasado por lo mismo que ella puede llegar a entender. Esto ha generado muchas discusiones y opiniones en redes acerca de este anime y su protagonista. A lo largo del anime vemos cómo Hinako llega a justificar todo lo que piensa y siente constantemente. Y a pesar de toda la ayuda y compañía que recibe, ella aún sigue teniendo ese deseo de acabar con su vida. O bueno, no ella, sino cualquiera que sea capaz de quitarle la vida, ella felizmente aceptaría dejarlo que lo haga.

This is where we introduce Shiori, a character who has been grabbing everyone’s attention ever since her first appearance in the anime. What’s fascinating about her is that she isn’t human, but a Yokai—just like the creature that dragged her to the bottom of the ocean at the beginning of the story. However, unlike the monsters Hinako sees in the ocean, Shiori is a mermaid. She promises Hinako she’ll end her life by “eating her,” but only when she reaches her “peak flavor”—which, according to Shiori, is when she’s truly happy with her life. In the meantime, she’ll protect her from other yokai.
You see the irony in all this, don’t you? Shiori tells Hinako—who wants to die—that she’ll only eat her alive when she’s happy, which she obviously isn’t right now. I don’t think I need to explain any further for you to get an idea of what this is all about. A young high school student who wants to die now has as her classmate a beautiful girl who is actually a yokai who promised to devour her alive when she’s happy. This premise might catch more than one person’s attention, but I’m warning you now that it’s much deeper than it appears at first.
Es aquí donde mencionamos a Shiori, un personaje que, desde su primera aparición en el anime, ya llama muchísimo la atención. Lo fascinante de ella es que no es humana, sino una Yokai, al igual que lo es la criatura que se la llevó al fondo del océano al principio de la trama. Sin embargo, a diferencia de los monstruos que ve Hinako en el océano, Shiori es una Sirena. Ella le promete a Hinako acabar con su vida “comiéndola”, pero solo cuando ella “su punto máximo de sabor” que, según Shiori, es cuando sea realmente feliz con su vida. Mientras tanto, ella la protegerá de otros yokais.

Something that caught my attention recently when I was researching this anime and its source material is that it’s classified as “Yuri” (a Japanese term referring to love stories between girls). And this really surprised me because, in all 13 episodes that make up this anime, I haven’t seen any signs of yuri as such. Although it’s also worth noting that they only animated a small part of the entire manga, so who knows if those elements will appear in a future second season. What I did notice, however, is that the anime does a great job of developing its main characters.
Especially Hinako, who, due to her mental and emotional state, finds it difficult to lead a normal or peaceful life. She often spends her time disconnected from everything around her, as if she were at the bottom of the ocean. There’s also the promise Shiori made to devour her when she’s happy—something Hinako believes will never happen, which makes her feel even worse. However, the company she keeps with both Shiori and Miko helps her rethink her life a little. On the other hand, we also have Shiori herself, who, despite being a Yokai, undergoes a development that really catches the eye.
Algo que me llamó la atención hace poco cuando investigué sobre este anime y su obra original es que se trata de un “Yuri” (demografía japonesa para referirse a historias de amor entre chicas). Y me extrañó mucho esto ya que, en todos los 13 episodios que conforman este anime no he visto ninguna señal de yuri como tal. Aunque también hay que destacar que apenas animaron solo una parte de todo el manga, así que quién sabe si esas cosas se verán en una futura segunda temporada. Lo que sí me fijé bien es que el anime logra desarrollar muy bien a sus personajes principales.
Especialmente a Hinako quien, debido a su estado mental y emocional, no se le hace fácil tener una vida normal o tranquila. Frecuentemente se la pasa desconectada de todo su alrededor, como si estuviera en el fondo del océano. También está la promesa que le hizo Shiori de devorarla cuando ella sea feliz, cosa que ella cree que nunca sucederá y que la hace sentirse aún peor. Sin embargo, la compañía que tiene tanto con Shiori como con Miko la ayudan a replantearse un poco su vida. Por otro lado, también tenemos a la misma Shiori quien, a pesar de ser un Yokai, tiene un desarrollo que llama muchísimo la atención.

Especially in the final episodes, where we uncover the mystery she’s been hiding about Hinako and her past. The mere fact that they give such a remarkable backstory to a monster—in this case, a Mermaid—already says a lot about this anime. It’s not your typical supernatural anime where yokai are just enemies or creatures to be defeated. Here, every yokai we meet has its own origin story, but the ones that most resemble or interact with humans are the ones that get the most development. Speaking of which, there’s also the case of Miko, who claims to be Hinako’s best friend.
I don’t want to say too much about her since that would be a spoiler, but I’ll just say she’s another standout character in this series. Her presence and involvement show us a rather different—and even a bit colorful—side of this depressing story. Because yes, this anime has so many melodramatic elements that it’s hard to stay neutral from start to finish. The series has the power to make you get swept up in Hinako’s thoughts or her way of seeing the world. We also see how Shiori and Miko’s decision-making adds a special touch to this work.
Sobre todo en los episodios finales donde descubrimos todo el misterio que ella guarda sobre Hinako y su pasado. El simple hecho de que le den un desarrollo tan notable a un monstruo como lo es, en este caso, una Sirena ya da mucho de qué hablar sobre este anime. No llega a ser el típico anime sobrenatural donde los yokais solo son enemigos o criaturas que hay que vencer. Aquí cada yokai que conocemos tiene su origen, pero los que más se parecen o interactúan como humanos son los que más desarrollo tienen. Hablando de esto, también tenemos el caso de Miko quien dice ser la mejor amiga de Hinako.
No quiero hablarles mucho sobre ella ya que eso sería darles algún spoiler, solo les diré que es otro de los personajes más destacables de esta serie. Su presencia y participación nos muestra un lado bastante diferente y hasta un poco colorido de esta depresiva historia. Porque si, este anime posee tantos elementos melodramáticos que es difícil mantenerse neutral de principio a fin. La serie tiene toda la capacidad de hacer que te dejes llevar por los pensamientos de Hinako o su forma de ver el mundo. También vemos cómo la toma de decisiones de Shiori y Miko le da un toque especial a esta obra.

The lesson this anime teaches us is crystal clear—you don’t have to be a fortune-teller to figure it out just by watching it. Aside from trying to show you the value of life, it also teaches us the importance of enjoying the present and being grateful to those who are with you today. It also shows us that happiness can be found even in people and places you’d never in a million years expect to find it. The whole theme of depression, the loss of a loved one, and the strong desire to end it all are things that make this story much more complex than a simple high school story.
While the anime prioritizes all the elements I mentioned, it doesn’t neglect the supernatural aspect either. There are scenes that are quite visually striking, and that’s something I also love. The studio behind this anime has only made a couple of Yuri anime before, but they still pulled off a pretty faithful adaptation that managed to capture everything the original work intended from the start. Both the character designs and the Yokai designs are worth highlighting. Especially Hinako and her dull, lifeless appearance, which contrasts sharply with the seemingly colorful world around her.
La lección que nos deja este anime es más que clara, no hay que ser adivino para saberlo con solo verlo. Aparte de intentar mostraros el valor que tiene la vida, también nos enseña la importancia de disfrutar del presente y de ser agradecido con los que te acompañan hoy en día. También nos muestra que la felicidad yace incluso en personas y lugares que jamás en la vida creerías que habitan. Todo el tema de la depresión, la pérdida de un ser querido y el fuerte deseo de acabar con todo son cosas que hacen de esta historia algo mucho más complicado que una simple historia de estudiantes de secundaria.
El anime, si bien tiene prioridad en todo esto que les mencioné, no deja de lado el tema de lo sobrenatural tampoco. Hay escenas que impactan bastante a nivel visual y eso es algo que también me encanta. El estudio a cargo de este anime es uno que solo tiene experiencia en hacer un par de animes Yuri, pero aún así se lució con una adaptación animada bastante fiel que logró transmitir todo lo que la obra original buscaba desde un principio. Tanto el diseño de los personajes como de los Yokais son dignos de destacar. Sobre todo Hinako y su aspecto todo apagado y sin brillo en contraste con el mundo aparentemente colorido que la rodea.

There are also the original visual effects they use, such as the one we see when Hinako zones out and it looks as if everything around her is at the bottom of the ocean. The blend of light color palettes with dark tones, light, and shadow is excellent. The show doesn’t hold anything back, which is also striking, especially in death scenes. The sound effects are excellent, especially during the disconnection moments when we hear the sound of the ocean in the background. The soundtrack is no slouch either, standing out with its melodramatic sounds. In short, here’s a drama anime that’s very different from anything you’ve likely seen before.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the drama and supernatural genres.
También están los efectos visuales originales que utilizan, como por ejemplo está ese efecto que vemos cuando Hinako se desconecta y notamos que pareciera que todo a su alrededor estuviera en el fondo del océano. La mezcla de paletas de colores claros con tonos oscuros, luces y sombras es excelente. La obra no nos censura nada, lo cual también llama la atención, sobre todo en escenas de muertes. Los efectos de sonido son excelentes, sobre todo por los momentos de desconexión donde escuchamos sonidos de océano de fondo. La banda sonora tampoco se queda atrás al destacarse con sonidos melodramáticos. En fin, les dejo un anime de drama muy diferente a todo lo que seguramente conoces.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género del drama y sobrenatural.
