As previously mentioned on an earlier post, I upgraded to a Sony A7iii camera this year. The biggest pro for me with this camera is that I can see live in the display what the final image is going to look like. It made taking shots a joy and removed so much of the guess work. So the first thing I wanted to do was walk, go for a day out and shoot. It was also my first time on a train in about 3 years and that and things so much easier too. It cost less than petrol, no driving, although I like to drive, no hassle finding a parking place, paying for parking, and then battling traffic in and out. 30 minute, on the train, and I was in York in the sunshine.
I'd been wanting to try street photography too, where the aim is more to record what is happening than create a setup piece
So I wandered and recorded what I saw. At first there is a bit of nervousness when photographing strangers and thats understandable. I always give a polite smile and if asked I'm happy to show what I have taken.
Starting chronologically I was in York train station which has a fantastic roof for architectural type shots as well as plenty of opportunities for people shots
And then I headed out to the Ramblers, the area that surrounds the cathedral. This is a very old location with narrow cobbled streets and what feels like over hanging shop fronts, think Harry Potter and Diagon Alley
I have to admit I felt very free wandering and recording what was around me. As someone else had said it wasn't about going out and getting "Bangers!" those big shots that everyone would go wild for, more about getting out, wandering, exploring and just enjoying being out with my camera. Once I changed my mind to this way of thinkng it took a lot of pressure off and made the day really enjoyable.
As a photographer I try to mix what I do in my shots, I've done still life, some macro work, lightpainting and I enjoy a good model shoot. If you'd like to check out any of my other work I'm on Facebook, or you can find me on Instagram under neilru75
