Hello Tasteem members!
Here I am at the place which is rich with history and has been listed as UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE at one of the state in Malaysia which is Malacca. With their tradition which reflected in their foods as well and Malacca’s food received recognition from the World Street Food Congress and today, I'm going to share their authentic Nyonya dishes which you can't find anywhere else better.
There are numerous Nyonya Restaurants in Malacca but few can boost authentic cuisine cooked by Chinese Straits-born.
Introduction
Bayonya Restaurant is owned by both husband and wife who is secret behind the delicious food which keeps the customers coming back for more.
The 50-year-old shy and motherly Lee has been keeping traditional recipes from her grandmother by constantly whipping up dishes. These are the dishes pulling in the crowd especially Singaporeans into this little restaurant.
Their business operates from 11:30 am till 9:30 pm and closed on every Wednesday.
The Outlook
The exterior, however, is rather quaint with stained glass windows and little roofs at the door and windows and a cut-out Baba and Nyonya couple.
This little restaurant located at the end of the street, Padang Pahlawan.
Interior
The owner has rightfully decided to keep the decor simple by not cluttering the place with Straits paraphernalia. But don't worry, this is a fully air conditioning restaurant!
We went there for late lunch as you can see from the pictures above which there is not much customer.
Let's check the menu
Few pages of menu are good enough to serve the tradition Nyonya dishes.
Fish & Prawns Menu
Squid & Chicken Menu
Vege, Omelette, Beancurd, Soup & Others
Beverages & Desserts Menu
As you can see, there are small icons located below at every page of the menu beside the beverages. Chef’s Recommendation / Less Spicy / Spicy Is easier for new customers who can or cannot handle spicy foods or the chef recommended dishes. All I can say is, FRIENDLY RESTAURANT!
Food is Served
I always order specialty or signature dishes whenever I visit especially never been to the restaurant.
Here comes what I ordered;
Asam Pedas Fish Head - Fish Head Sour & Spicy
This is my all time favorite whenever I go for Nyonya Restaurant and everyone has their own interpretation but this is one of the best and made me endless adaptations. Besides the fish head is fresh, they taste sour, spicy hot and tastes extraordinary satisfaction. The fish simmered in lemongrass, ginger, garlic, chili, onion, and shallots. This dish is a must in the inventory as the main course and commonly served with rice. Yummy!!
For those who can't handle too spicy, you can request for less spicy!
Ayam Cili Garam - Chicken in Salt & Chili
This is my other favorite! Deep fried chicken with special homemade chili paste. The skin is dry and shatters like a potato chips, the meats are well marinated and tasty. The texture are perfect, not too hard and easy to chew.
Nyonya Chap Chai - Nyonya Mixed Vege
This is a common dish but what makes it different in Nyonya version apart from the other chap chai is the fermented soy sauce. The stir-fried cabbage, fungi and glass noodles are fresh.
How Much?
For the first item is the fish, which they never state the price and is based on market price (as listed in the menu), but the owner is honest to charge us at a reasonable price. The others are fixed price based from the menu. All I can say is worth the value of the food! TOTAL PRICE 82.30 MALAYSIA RINGGIT (est 20 USD)
Conclusion
Nyonya cooking is the blend of Chinese ingredients with their distinct spices and cooking techniques. Price cheap and is a MUST TRY when you are here! Get ready to spice up your life!
